Beneath Beautiful, by Allison Rushby

When a handsome stranger approaches Cassie Tavington in Paris's beautiful Pre Lachaise cemetery, she has no idea who he is. It doesn't take long to find out. A whispered name from a passerby shocks her into the realisation that it's Cameron Callahan, high-profile modern artist, who she's busy showing around the cemetery.

Mortified, Cassie runs, but Cameron soon tracks her down. He's intent on having Cassie sit for him, but Cassie isn't sure. His provocative sculptures are often in the media, which isn't somewhere that Cassie, the daughter of a politician, should be.

But there's no denying the attraction between the pair, and Cassie soon finds herself in a strange whirlwind of a relationship. Between Paris, London and New York, Cassie finds sitting for an artist isn't as simple as it seems. There's much to contend with—including Cameron's ex-girlfriend, Plum, her own father, and her new love interest, James.

With the clock ticking down to the opening of Cameron's new exhibition, Cassie must struggle to decide just how much of herself she can give over to Cameron and his sculpture while still remaining whole.

The writing was good. I just had one issue.
By CJ
Cassie is sitting in a cemetery reading while she is approached by a man who introduces himself as Cameron. Shortly she finds out that this man is not just a regular man, but Cameron Callahan, a high-profile famous artist. Cameron is enamored with Cassie and asks her to sit for him and be a part of his next exhibit. Cassie has concerns about being part of his exhibit since Cameron’s art is very “different”. Cassie has never met a man like Cameron. His persona draws her to him something no man has ever done before. Cassie agrees to sit for Cameron and soon they begin to learn about each other.
I felt like this book led me on. Wasn’t there an attraction? Was it all my imagination? I felt like I was cheated to feel one way and then things ended a whole different way. It was like a story about a girl that goes on a date, thinks that the guy likes and is attracted to her but he never calls her back. When she sees him again, he tells her that he only asked her out as friends and not as lovers.
How this story ended was not how I saw it going at all. I even reread certain sections of the book. The relationship with the other character felt forced. I don’t know how to categorize this book. Was it a romance? I cannot answer. Yes there is romance...in a way. It is a story about a 21 year old woman, almost 22 who begins to analyze her life and her maturity and how she sees herself and how people see her. Then she meets Cameron.
Cassie does analyze every thought and at times I felt it became too much, but that was not what bothered me. I would have given the book a 4, but the story did not leave me fulfilled and that is why I am rating it 3 stars. I can’t say more because days after finishing this book, I just did not see it ever ending it like that. Maybe I was just seeing something that wasn’t there. I want to close by saying that maybe it was not the ending I wanted but that does not mean I discourage people from reading this story. Reading is very subjective.
A copy was provided in exchange for an honest review.

Perhaps not the story you think it will be
By Vox Libris
Sometimes when I finish reading a book, I find myself wondering, "What was that all about?"

Such is the case with this one.

It isn't that Beneath Beautiful is a bad book; it isn't at all. It's more that I can't figure out its purpose, and I think that's because Allison Rushby wasn't quite sure herself.

Cassie is twenty-one and already a literary sensation, or at the very least a popular one. She's written a best-selling children's series, and while she doesn't appear quite proud of that - she seems more embarrassed than anything - she hopes she can break out of the series and write something more her. While reading Moby Dick in a cemetery in Paris (just go with it), she meets Cameron Callahan, a famous artist known for his nudes and his rapacious social life. When he asks Cassie to pose for him, she takes off running. Cameron, though, is not to be dissuaded. He finds her and gives her the hard sell, and before she seems to realize what she's agreed to, she's on a plane, heading to New York.

Cassie soon learns that not everything she's heard about Cameron is true. She also realizes that she is increasingly attracted to him, and she believes he's attracted to her as well. There is an ex-girlfriend of his lurking about, a woman who makes Cassie feel a bit insecure regarding Cameron, and there is a journalist who takes an interest in Cassie himself.

This book does not go where you think it will. You're sort of lulled into thinking it's a romance between Cassie and Cameron - and it is, to a small degree. Then you wonder if it's a romance between Cassie and the journalist - and it is, to a small degree. What is bigger than the romance is Cassie's growth and maturation. She becomes more confident in herself, more secure, more adult. She begins choosing her own path, and she stops apologizing for her decisions.

She's an interesting character, but she pales when juxtaposed against Cameron. He is mysterious and intriguing, and I found myself often distracted by him and my curiosity about him. The journalist is not nearly as compelling, and his story arc feels rushed and artificial.

I enjoyed this book, but when it ended, I didn't miss the characters. I did - I do - want to know more about Cameron, but Cassie? I was ready to say good-bye to her.

Rushby writes well, although at times I wished she had had a stronger editor. There are occasional lapses, whether in focus or in pacing, and they are troublesome. Still, this book undoubtedly will have its fans. I'm just not a big one.

Easy Read
By Sara Jane Yates
l enjoyed this book. Liked that characters played off each other. Got a little tired of the "my fault, guilt bit" but it was justified later in the story when everything came to the light.
This is a good read, doesn't demand a lot of concentration to keep everyone in line and is just what is needed with a winter like we're having for light, easy entertainment.

Review
"

"Talented but timid? This noted ad‐man is here to tell you that ambition, not just mere ability, is the key to success in his world ... Arden is punchy and memorable about ’failing better next time’." – i-D

"Saatchi & Saatchi creative legend‐turned‐director Paul Arden has committed his considerable wit and creative thinking to paper in a handy‐sized book on how to succeed. Not just in advertising but in business generally. Far from being one of those excruciating self‐help guides favored by buttoned‐down businessmen, It’s Not How Good You Are, It’s How Good You Want To Be is a startlingly refreshing, unputdownable collection of thought‐provoking pearls of wisdom." – Shots

"Chapters such as It’s Right to be Wrong, Have you Noticed How the Cleverest People at School Are Not Those Who Make It In Life? and Do Not Seek Praise, Seek Criticism are accompanied by an entertaining collection of photos and illustrations. Get it and you’ll never think the same way again." – Shots

"The former creative director of Saatchi & Saatchi teaches readers how to smash down life’s impossible barriers using a fresh combination of wit, smart thinking, and horiffic mistakes. Outrageously genius." – The Good Book Guide

". . .A wonderful book by one of the most brilliant men I have ever met. . . I met him when he worked as creative director at Saatchi and Saatchi and he was simply inspirational – as is this practical, unpretentious little book." – Amanda Platell

"...Deliciously rich paperback..." – Chicago Sun‐Times

"British adman Paul Arden’s semi‐parodic study in self‐help is as funny as it is provocative..." – Radar

"Who is this guy Arden anyway? Please forgive my enthusiasm this month for quoting Paul Arden extensively, but his wisdom has recently inspired me. Arden was the creative director of Saatchi & Saatchi from 1977–1992, and his tiny new book out in May, It’s Not How Good You Are, It’s How Good You Want to Be (Phaidon , $7.95), packs a big punch. This magnificent little manifesto is for true creative types to read, savor and carry in their pocket. It should remind us all that nothing is impossible." – PAPER magazine

The Crucible, by Arthur Miller

In the rigid theocracy of Salem, Massachusetts, rumors that women are practicing witchcraft galvanize the town. In the ruthlessness of the prosecutors and the eagerness of neighbor to testify against neighbor, The Crucible mirrors the anti-Communist hysteria in the 1950s.

A Moving and Brilliant Play
By M. A Netzley
The play's main narrative line tells the story of the Salem witch hunts which took place in Massachusetts, 1692. At a deeper level, Miller raises several powerful and important questions about human life and morality. But the play's most amazing quality is that it is not "deep" or "philosophical" by traditional standards. Miller has, in a short and easy-to-read manuscript, opened the door (or maybe I should say he presents the reader with a mirror) to modern political life.
The play is essentially a crtique of McCarthyism and the the communist scare of the 1950s. Miller saw the parallels between the witch hunts and the McCarthy trials, and found the witch trials to be a compelling vehicle for discussing modern events. Key themes include:
1. People gaining absolution from the powers-that-be by confessing the sins of others.
2. The power of community rituals, such as confession.
3. The role of political opposition and the consequences of compliance (passive or active).
4. The consequences of a polarized world views and mass hysteria.
These are just a few of the themes. The play is quite clearly a great tragedy, but remains a tragedy for our times. Through characters we can connect with, Miller convincingly shows us that the lessons from the witch hunts still apply. As a reader, I am convinced that Miller's play remains relevant and powerful in the twenty-first century. Miller has left me with questions, regarding world events in 2002 and 2003, that I did not have before reading the play.
I read this play in only a couple hours. It is compelling, engaging, and difficult to put down. Personally, I feel this text stands a great chance of making it onto my "top ten" list of best manuscripts. I highly recommend this play.

Frightening Possibilities
By RCM
As usual, Arthur Miller was in rare form when he wrote "The Crucilble." Although on the surface it is about the Salem Witch Trials, Miller's true inspiration came from the Red Scare that plagued Hollywood in the middle of the twentieth century (and included his pal Elia Kazan). The fact that Miller wove factual history with the hysteria of his day makes "The Crucible" all the more chilling.

Throughout the course of the play, a collection of teenage girls 'confess' to having seen various women and men of the town of Salem with the devil. This hysteria sweeps over the town as even the authorities fall under the sway of these lying young girls. Caught in the middle of these hysteronics is the Proctor family - John and Elizabeth, who have struggled in the past, but are trying to rebuild their marriage. They are rent apart when Elizabeth is suspected of being a witch. John hopes to clear his wife's name, but only manages to make matters worse for both of them.

The hysteria experienced in Salem is chilling in the fact that these sorts of witch hunts occur today, in all different areas of society. "The Crucible" shows how easily people can be swayed, with the barest of evidence, to believe something that is false. Miller's play is extremely well-written and informative, and almost too frighteningly real.

a great recording
By Amazon Customer
I used this recording this year while teaching "The Crucible". My students loved it!! The emotion conveyed by the cast is SO much better than the typical monotone voice that students use while reading out loud. Even though there were some small parts that are skipped when following along with our textbook, it was completely worth it (and the parts skipped were very small - it was very easy to read it aloud if necessary).

From the Back Cover

A Guide to Thinking and Acting Like an Expert leads counseling students through the step-by-step process of receiving client information, synthesizing the data, and understanding how to respond and act effectively. With a central focus on this procedural knowledge, this guide also concentrates on developing the skills needed to build client relationships in order to elicit helpful client disclosure, and, ultimately, become an “expert” counselor who can extract the important information from a situation and move from the ‘if’ of the client data to the ‘then’ of an intervention or solution.

While the text highlights four essential theories regarding successful counseling – solution-focused, behavioral, cognitive, and transtheoretical – what makes A Guide to Thinking and Acting Like an Expert unique is its central focus on applying these theories to guide analysis, decision making, and action in the field -- effectively moving counselors-in-training smoothly from comprehension to application to evaluation.

Special Features Include:

  • A focus on procedural knowledge as opposed to pure theory that teaches students not only the differing philosophies of counseling techniques but also how to apply these practices to real counselor-client situations.
  • Clinical illustrations of the concepts and constructions discussed in the corresponding text that appear in each chapter, showing students how the theories and ideas discussed translate into real-life situations and cases.
  • In-depth case verbatim with superimposed “counselor thinking” that clearly portrays the thought processes involved in listening to a client, extracting the pertinent information, and deciding on an appropriate course of action.
  • Guided practice exercises that provide students with the opportunity to apply what they have read and think critically about the practices and procedures they have learned.
  • A list of additional resources at the end of each chapter that assist students in independent projects or research – both at the library and on the web.

Great book
By J. Chrzan
I used this text book frequently while completing my fall and spring internships for graduate school. I like how they show counselor and client session examples in the book of how to use specific counseling techniques. Great book for learning how to demonstrate Cognitive Behavioral, Behavioral, and Solution Focused approaches in therapy sessions. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone in a Masters' clinical counseling program.

Carly Q introduces us to a couple of very appealing characters in 'Solitude'. You won't regret reading this story!
By mujertropical
I became familiar with Carly's work last year, as she was writing this novel. Few writers have the knack to grab a person's attention from the get go; she is one of them. The romance genre is full of tropes and predictability tends to be the norm, but the author manages to imbue her characters with depth of personality and a mixture of vulnerability and strength that is very appealing in its humanity. Regan and J.T. are two people I wish were real so I could be their friend. What a great couple!

If you love a good yarn and romance is your jam, give Carly Q's novel a chance. I predict that - like me - you'll soon find yourself looking forward to the rest of the story.

A surprisingly bittersweet read
By Liz
I wasn't quite sure what to think of this book when I first read it. There's Regan and Sean, her husband, having a conversation - only he's her "late" husband and he hasn't quite gone on to the light. Then there's a scruffy paleontologist, whom we shall call Doc througout who enters her life and suddenly things start to change. Will she move on? Will the Doc? Will Sean?

One of the reasons I like indie books is that once in a while you find a diamond in the rough, that brave storyteller who's not afraid to tell the story she's always wanted to tell. And you find yourself wondering when her next book is coming out.

Loved it.
By Abby Vegas
This book really grew on me. Once I got into it, I found it difficult to put down. The two main characters were beautifully written and I thought the dialogue was particularly strong. Well done and I hope to read more by this author.

London Labour and the London Poor (Wordsworth Classics of World Literature), by Henry Mayhew

With an Introduction by Rosemary O'Day. London Labour and the London Poor is a masterpiece of personal inquiry and social observation. It is the classic account of life below the margins in the greatest Metropolis in the world and a compelling portrait of the habits, tastes, amusements, appearance, speech, humour, earnings and opinions of the labouring poor at the time of the Great Exhibition. In scope, depth and detail it remains unrivalled. Mayhew takes us into the abyss, into a world without fixed employment where skills are declining and insecurity mounting, a world of criminality, pauperism and vice, of unorthodox personal relations and fluid families, a world from which regularity is absent and prosperity has departed. Making sense of this environment required curiosity, imagination and a novelist s eye for detail, and Henry Mayhew possessed all three. No previous writer had succeeded in presenting the poor through their own stories and in their own words, and in this undertaking Mayhew rivals his contemporary Dickens. To pass from one to the other, writes one authority, is to cross sides of the same street.

A Unique view of Victorian London
By Robert H. Buckley
I want to add my voice to those who have given this edition high reviews.
What makes this book unique is that it is a first hand account of the social conditions of poor London city dwellers almost two hundred years ago. It is also a catalog of the methods used in the countless street trades and confidence tricks that have all but disappeared in modern times. A few still existed when I was a child!
This is a far more interesting reading experience than conventional history books, which are written long after the events and therefore rely on comments gathered from distant sources. Unless we choose to believe that the author had reason to deceive us (Julius Caesar comes to mind) we do well to trust contemporary accounts. The book also strikes close to home. Many large cities in Europe, and the USA, suffered similar privations in the same period, and we may be willing to suppose that some of our family forebears were personally affected. Mayhew was the live reporter at the scene.

Richest source ever on Victorian London Laboring Poor
By Alan Venable
An astoundingly detailed account of life among the poor and on the streets of Victorian London, circa 1850. The personal accounts are amazing and continually surprising in their basic humanity. This book condenses Mayhew's original four-volume work. Sadly it had to leave out a gazillion details of the lives, thoughts, and methods of the rat--flea-fly-cockroach catchers! But it keeps a great long section about how early low-end commercial photographers cheated, bamboozled and otherwise wheedled six-pence out of customers who had no clue about what a photograph was.

Definitely an eye opener!
By spongella
If you want to know how it was like for the lower working class in London and their daily routines and rituals, this is the book, written by someone who interviewed the ragtag army of merchants and menial workers who ecked out a meager and difficult existence of those days. Makes you appreciate living as it is today.
