The Chapins represent America at its best

Fantastic book.

Harry hit the music world when I was about 6 years old, and by the time I was 10, I had become a real fan. "Verities & Balderdash" was the first album I ever bought, in exchange for straightening up my parent's garage. I knew his work was meant for a much older audience, and sometimes I didn't even understand the references, but his spirit reached me through his songs. I knew that this was a good man, a sensitive and caring man, and a man who shaped my own life in ways he will never understand. Harry taught me about the world in a way my own father never could and I have felt a part of his family ever since, even though they never knew me.

But you don't want to hear about me. This book itself is a quality product. It is very tastefully laid out with great anecdotes and personal artifacts from the Chapin family collection. I can't imagine any Chapin fan not feeling this was money well spent. Granted, a fair portion of this book is devoted to Harry's family and ancestors, more so than things like backstage photos, and some may find that a bit out of the ordinary for a "fan" book, but if you, like me, have felt welcomed into the unseen, extended Chapin family, then you will enjoy the refreshing openness of their awesome family. I see a recognition in their faces that touch me more than the photos of my own unknown relative in my own family albums. I see a creative and humble family spanning many decades long past, and I can't help but feel these people are the best of America, representing our hopes, dreams, and most of all our humanity. We will never forget Harry, and we are thankful that his family has shared their family with ours.

This book will live in the display case of my most cherished items.

Anyone Harry Chapin fan will really enjoy this book. It is very well done and has so many great pictures. A wonderful look into the life of one of the greatest singer songwriter, humanitarian, and person around. Money very well spent. We miss you, Harry.

We were/are huge Chapin fans, and it still makes us sad to think about how young he was taken from all of us. This book is a must for any Chapin fan.

the dialogue for the characters is fun and believable

I haven't finished reading yet, but I really appreciate how the author(s) incorporated Iris into the story, which is something the show can take notes on. She's shown doing her job, helping Barry, having a girls' night with Caitlin, etc.

Aside from that, the dialogue for the characters is fun and believable, and I think the plot is interesting enough to be an actual episode of the show!

the SHOW feels like the cash-grab

I cannot speak highly enough about this book! When I first heard about it, I thought it was some cash-grab book, but once I read it, the SHOW feels like the cash-grab. I don't think the characters have been more themselves than they were in this book, and I am straight GRATEFUL for the thought the authors put into their work. It's incredible, and it's so much fun!

with sunlight in my bones, that I felt at home in Algeria when
I first set foot on her genial soil in 1872? Or was my satisfac-
tion the effect of the contrast to dark and dingy Brittany, where
the interiors are black, and the mud floors absorb the sun's rays ;
where the low gray clouds could serve as an appropriate frame
and background to no other low-toned, sullen, and sombre figure
than the Breton, and where white objects are not luminous, be-
cause they are not supported and encouraged to shine by the
reflections from their surroundings ? Certain it is that my first
impressions of North Africa can never be dispelled. The near
prospect of revisiting its sunny shores was to me one of those
delightful anticipations in life which haunt the fancy ; and no
sooner had I set foot on land than I began with joy to sniff the
odors so peculiar to Oriental towns perfumes of musk, tobacco,
orange-blossoms, coffee, hashish a subtle combination which
impregnates Algerine clothing and hovers about the shops and
bazaars.

Algiers, seen from the sea, is a mass of white surrounded
by the dark green of the olives : the Arabs compare it to a
diamond set in an emerald frame. The city is also called
" Alger la Blanche," and again Algiers has been compared to
a white dove settling on the hill-side. The aspect of the old
town which suggested to its author this comparison must
have been similar to that presented to us on this ideal night;
and how difficult it was to realize the change which had
taken place in this hot-bed of corsairs and pirates during the
nineteenth century! Only as far back as 1830 when the
French took possession of Algiers anything but "doves"
had settled on this hill-side ; blood-thirsty and tyrannical deys
gloated on murder, bondage, slavery, rapine, and on the ex-
tortion from the rulers of surrounding countries of money,
ships, cannon, munitions of war.

The pupil's stationery and books at the Arab school do
not cost his parents a great amount. A slate, so called,
but made of hard-wood, is the medium of knowledge.
The surface becomes as smooth as glass by repeated application
of fine pipe-clay, which is moistened with water and rubbed on
with the fingers. When the lad has filled his slate on both
sides with dictations from the Koran, written in ink with a reed-
pen, and has committed its contents to memory, he washes it
and renews the coating of clay. A mistake is easily corrected
with the wet finger.

In some parts of Algeria and Tunis a curious custom is
still practised at the moment the bride enters the room : the
bridegroom, walking backward, holds a dagger, and the bride
follows him, holding the point of the blade in the tips of her
fingers.

Another custom, not less strange, consists in the partial
martyrdom of the bride, who stands against a column in the
public place, and under the gaze of the people, for two hours
or more, and in an erect position, her eyes closed, her arms
close at her sides, her feet resting only on the narrow base of
the column. The bride sometimes collapses and faints during
the ordeal.

The Arab women here wear a long black veil, tied across
the nose and just under the eyes, which, like the Cairo veil,
gives a funereal appearance. This veil differs from that worn
by Algerian women, which is white, and in the form of a hand-
kerchief folded cornervvise.

Making the Team Makes the Grade!

Whether you work in teams, design them, or study them, you will find much of value in this book. Drawing on a wealth of social and behavioral science findings, Leigh Thompson shows the advantages, and the pitfalls, of getting things done through teamwork. Clearly written, with many case examples, Thompson builds on her research and consulting experiences to create a complex picture of what makes groups tick. I particularly liked her explanation of how to foster creativity in teams, as well as how to deal with the inevitable conflicts that arise. She notes that teams are not a panacea. However, under the right conditions, properly organized teams contribute substantially to their organizations. If you're dissatisfied with the way things are going in your organization, this book would make a great (anonymous?) gift for your boss!

Worth the Price for "External Evironments"

Leigh Thompson has done it again. Like few others this Northwestern University scholar takes current research and puts it on the page like few other experts. I particularly found the sections on dealing with conflict within teams, creativity, and social capital (in the External Evironment section) worth reading. I keep this book with me when I am meeting with a team. I use the individual chapters as a guide for activities there. If you have an interest in teams, Leigh Thompson is the one expert you should include in your library.

Good resource

This book was required by my Masters level Management class. Not what I would call a "page turner" but it is research-based and current. I have used the notations as a jumping off point for further research when writing research papers. It is heavily geared towards management principles in a team environment. I rented this one from Amazon and will have to return it or purchase. I'm seriously considering purchasing due to the wealth of research reference material.
