It's been a couple of years since I've read this, but I still think of the twins at least a couple of times a week. This is 100% the craziest (true) story you will ever read.
I would suggest buying a few copies because you will probably give yours away to someone because you NEED to have someone else read it so you can talk about how insane everything is.

Amazing book, awful photograph quality

The one reason I did not rate four stars is because the pictures in the book are difficult- some are impossible to see. It may be the paper or the quality; many of the pictures are too dark thus making it impossible to really get a feel of who these twins were, and their environment.
Otherwise, the book is impeccably researched by the author and well-written. I won't go into the details of what the book is about - too many reviews do this already - but then, it is hard to explain. It is not just about these two amazing women, but about family values and dynamics, sisterhood, mental health, the legal system, the dynamics of small towns, and bullying ...
I found the twins to be incredibly creative and it's a shame their work was not recognized by anyone else except the author. Wallace digs deep, and then deeper, into their story without pity or remorse, with respect for all involved. She is a TRUE journalist and gifted author.

Chilling, disturbing, insightful.

Grew up hearing about the silent twins because of their Barbadian roots. Fascinating that their relationship & a study of it has no doubt shifted the paradigm of the then existing body of research about Twins' interactions & the expected patterns of their lives. June Gibbons is living proof of that paradigm shift. A riveting, informative read, which will no doubt lead to further reading on the topic. A nod to Ms. Wallace, who in a sense became & remains their sturdy champion.

The Pirate's Booty

There was no way I couldn't read a book with this title that's about a cross-dressing lesbian pirate. The Pirate's Booty had a super fun concept and it ended up being a pretty fun read. Quinn is living the pirate's life. She's dressed as a man and has never felt more free. However, Quinn isn't looking for a lifetime of piracy. It's just a means to an end. When they were kids, she and her friend Shea swore to come to the other's rescue if they were ever taken by slave traders. Now, Quinn is making good on that promise.

The Pirate's Booty was a fun story. It's a mix of real people from history and fictional ones. Quinn is sailing under Grace O'Malley, and even though the captain is a woman, there's no way she'd let a female crew member onboard. So Quinn is now known as Kieran. Quinn is fiercely loyal to her friend and her captain, and she's determined to find Shea while also being an exceptional pirate. She fits right in with the crew, even better than her twin bother who tagged along to keep an eye on her. Quinn can fight, drink, and seduce with the best of them! In fact, she can teach those men a thing or two and does!

The one thing that kept me from loving The Pirate's Booty was that everything seemed to come so easily to Quinn. Everyone who meets her loves her. She's the best lover in the world (probably because she knows what women like). She's the best swordsman. She can knock out a man with a single punch. She frees slaves. She rescues crewmen. She befriends the queen of Scotland. She's just super awesome at everything! Where are her flaws?! And on top of that, her charade as a man comes easy as well. No one ever catches or suspects. There's never any mention of how she keeps her identity hidden when it comes to things like...using the bathroom, her period, or washing.

In the end, I did enjoy The Pirate's Booty. It's an exciting seafaring adventure! Not only is Quinn on a mission to find her friend, but her captain is trying to protect Ireland from the English lurking about their shores. She refuses to bow to Queen Elizabeth, and luckily her plans to fight the English happen to meld with Quinn's mission, so there's lots of action on the high seas!

Fun, well-rounded story

If you love reading adventure with well-rounded characters, this is a must read. I was drawn into the story before I finished the first chapter. I enjoy a book that pulls you into the story so that you can't turn the page fast enough and this book does exactly that. The characters are written as "human", with the normal, natural reactions and sense of humor that anyone has. The story of a young noblewoman in the 16th century setting out to find her kidnapped friend is made all the better by the fact that she is also a lesbian and must dress as a male pirate in order to be accepted into the situations she must go into. This story is fiction, with historical figures mixed with fictional characters, but it makes for a compelling storyline. If you enjoy fiction stories based in the 15th or 16th centuries, this is the one for you.

Check out Book 1 of this exciting new pirate series! Finally, a story featuring female pirates in lead roles! In an effort to rescue her kidnapped friend, Quinn puts aside her privileged but sterile life and discovers her true calling aboard the pirate ship of the fierce Grace O'Malley. This engrossing tale contains multiple twists, lots of action and expressions of love and loyalty--everything you need for a great, satisfying read! My one criticism: the contrived "pirate speak", especially when care wasn't always taken to differentiate accurately between a "Scottish burr" and an "Irish brogue" was, at times, enough to make me go "Arrrrgh!!!" Despite this, I was grateful to have this book to turn to during a rather stressful week, and I think it would make a fantastic movie--WAY better than "Pirates of the Caribbean"!!! Bring on Book 2!

I used many of these with a 6th grade performing arts exploratory class. The kids LOVED the choices especially the "duologues" and "triologues". I found them a wonderful resource for teaching perspective, as well.

About the Author
Linda K. Sienkiewicz is a published poet and fiction writer, cynical optimist, fan of corgis, tea drinker, and wine lover from Michigan. Her poetry, short stories, and art have been published in more than fifty literary journals, including Prairie Schooner, Clackamas Literary Review, Spoon River, and Permafrost. She received a poetry chapbook award from Bottom Dog Press, and an MFA from the University of Southern Maine. Linda lives with her husband in southeast Michigan, where they spoil their grandchildren and then send them back home.

An engaging and intriguing human story.

Despite the bleak beginning of “Context,” when Angelica takes her two children to see their father, Gavin, in prison, the novel turns into a love story with many surprises and twists of plot. Written as a love letter to Angelica's first love, Joe Vardas, Sienkiewicz’s narrative offers complex characters and unexpected plot twists. She has crafted a tale that maintains tension throughout, from the early scenes of high school romance and Joe’s mysterious disappearance, to revelations of dark secrets which Angie discovers as the story progresses.

The book is a page-turner, in part because of the uncertainty about Joe’s fate, but also because Angie encounters surprises which change her concept of who she is. She is a questioner, and with her, we question the significance of all that she finds; we experience what she experiences.

Another unique aspect of the book is the author’s subtle irony. Her depiction of Gavin’s dysfunctional family (“They never receive guests, and they couldn’t renovate a dog house,” Gavin tells her) is astute and detailed. The voice of the author moves from serious , intense and questioning to ironic, and she provides realistic pictures of characters which help to understand their temperaments and origins.

I strongly recommend this book as an engaging, very human story.

Heart and Soul Mates

This novel loosely takes the form of a letter to a first love from the perspective of many years later. The main character has a story to tell, and she's most interested in sharing it with the love of her life, who is also the one that got away. After a brief intense high school romance, scandal and circumstances tear these two apart and she spends years trying to recover from the split and another family betrayal. A completely unexpected turn in this good-girl into someone even she doesn't recognize lead to bad choices and consequences she could not have foreseen. How she is able to finally stand tall again comes out in her story to the lost love. Sienkiewicz is a poet and it shows in the language, which is exquisite and careful but never weighs down the plot, which carried me through to the end in one reading. I couldn't put it down, couldn't wait to see how the author would resolve this deep heartache. I was not disappointed. This moving story of fated soul mates and the author's unique narrative voice make this book one not to be missed.

"This is what happened after you left without a word." In the Context of Love is written as a one-sided conversation with Angelica's first love, who, fifteen years later, had become "the scapegoat for everything that had gone wrong in the last fifteen years."

The prose is beautiful, even when the action is gritty. She leads the reader unflinchingly through first love, and the joy, lust, and pain that left a young girl's life permanently altered.

"Your kisses tasted like freedom."
"I wanted to be the opposite of my mother... I was sure I knew more about sex than she did."

Angelica's mother, once nurturing, turns overprotective and obsessive as her daughter begins to grow up. Angelica clashes with her mother, unable to understand that the overprotective behavior is rooted in secrets so deep and so explosive that they will eventually fracture the family.

Angelica's downward spiral is heart-wrenching; you'd step in and save her from her self-destructive behavior if you could--but she's got to find her own way to cope with the wreckage of her life. The book was impossible to put down. Highly recommend!

The Gold standard on Neck Pain.

This reference on Neck Pain is awesome. I went through all the preliminary modalities of recommended treatments (Trigger Point Injections, Physical Therapy = Strength & Flexibility - Ice - KT Taping - Massage', Chiropractic Manipulation Tx.= 'Traction - Heat - Electrical Stimulation', Radiological X-rays, Cervical M.R.I., Cervical Epidural Corticosteroid Injections) without any significant improvements. The Medical community (physician's) force us (patient's) to undergo & exhaust any & all preliminary treatment options without finding the "root of the cause" in the first place?

I sincerely wish that I had discovered this book before I underwent four months of "pseudo" treatments that ended up costing me more than $1800.00 in "Co-payments" to various medical personnel (Primary Care Physician, Physiatrist, Physical Therapist, Chiropractor, Radiologist, Pain Management Clinic - Anesthesiologist). *Unfortunately, we are all "controlled" by Medical Insurance Companies that dictate & scrutinize every Medical recommendation & treatment plan. Everything must now be investigated & approved via the Insurance companies first. The patient's best interest is sacrificed & compromised by the Medical Insurance companies that control Doctor's & their modes of treatments & Diagnostic tests.

*Specifically, this book is awesome because it "pin-points" all various Cervical Neck Pain issues & topics. Personally, I wasted a lot of time, effort & money on useless treatment modalities (just to go through the motions) to satisfy the "Medical Insurance" coverage SYSTEM that controls Medical Doctor's. The "P.T., Chiropractor & Physiatrist" all admitted to my accusations & agreed about the Medical Insurance manipulation of the Tx. system.

*Finally, to the best part of this book. I learned that this book tells the TRUTH (about every treatment modality) right off the bat. It breaks down the various conditions & complaint issues about acute & chronic Neck Pain. *My specific condition was explained in detail. The book described exactly what a "PERCUTANEOUS RADIOFREQUENCY NEUROTOMY/ABLATION" is & how it works! *After reading this book & about this Treatment option, I researched for a Neuro-Surgeon/Pain Specialist that specialized in this procedure. It involves an electrode that coagulates the Medial Branch nerve at the Facet Joint. It basically zaps the nerve with a current that cuts conductivity to the effected area. Fully researched by Medical evidence & studies; it is the only proven way to treat chronic Neck Pain.

My goal in writing this book is to begin bringing to meadmakers the breadth and depth of knowledge and resources that are available to beer brewers and winemakers. I sought to cover the many aspects of meadmaking in a comprehensive but easy-to-read fashion, and to provide readers with an understanding of the role quality ingredients play in creating a really pleasing mead.

This complex, diverse and romantic drink deserves more attention than it has received in print. It can range from bone dry to profoundly sweet, and can be crafted to complement any type of food. If I spread some of my enthusiasm for mead, and for this simple, fun and remarkably rewarding hobby, then I will have succeeded at my task.

About the Author
Ken Schramm has been a meadmaker and amateur brewer since 1988. He has served on the Board of Advisors of the American Homebrewers Association and is the founding Competition Director of America's oldest mead competition, the Mazer Cup. He is an avid home orchardist, cultivating more than 100 varieties of fruit at his home in Troy, Michigan. He is also a dedicated fly tyer and fisherman.

A well rounded, up-to-date guide to Mead-Making

Ken Schramm presents a clear, logical guide to the art and science of mead-making, presenting traditional methodology and more recently developed techniques (such as no-boil or low temp processing) in a nice balance. While there is an introduction to the history of mead, it is not a long, drawn-out affair as in many texts, focusing more on considerations that prompted the advancement of technique. Since you are reading this book with an eye towards creating your own mead, this will probably be more useful to you than an obtuse history lesson.

Coming more from a winemaking background, Ken's discussion on the use of sulphites in mead was the most helpful item to me personally- with friends and family members sensitive to sulphites, it hadn't occurred to me that the inherent properties of honey could be used to minimize or even eliminate their use under certain circumstances. For me, this alone was worth the price of admission.

Also included is a fairly extensive guide to the additions of fruits and spices, with good advice on creating and blending your own creations, and some good "baseline" recipes to get you going, as well as a good discussion on sanitation practices.

Dated, not "compleat," but I'm still glad I purchased it

This book is *not* "compleat," and the main reason for that is that it's dated. It was published in 2003.

As a somewhat-experienced homebrewer, but who had never made a batch of mead, I purchased this book to learn about the craft. If you're already a homebrewer, then you'll find an awful lot in this book that you already know. I've never made wine before, but I suspect that the same comment would apply for an experienced home winemaker.

As I was almost ready to make my first batch, and I had some unanswered questions, I started to Google things and found references to things that are not mentioned in the book at all. A couple of notable items are degassing of the must and staggered nutrient additions, which are practices that arose after the book was published. In addition to those omissions (at no fault of the author, who is indeed a recognized expert on the subject of mead), I also found the book a to be little thin on certain technical details, like pitching rates, optimum fermentation temperatures and the like.

I still don't view the book as being money wasted and I'm glad that I got it, but I must caution the buyer that it is somewhat dated and is not "compleat." You'll still need to go online to various discussion boards and/or get guidance from experienced friends. And you'll find a lot in here that you already know if you're an experienced homebrewer.

Read it. Then read it again. Then memorize it.

There's not much to be said about this text that hasn't already been said by experienced and newbie mazers alike, but let me say it again in case any of you missed it: Schramm knows what he's about, and you need to read this book if you want to get into making mead. To put it mildly, I went from never having brewed anything to making award winning meads and setting up hives in my back yard within a couple of years. OK, so I'm obsessive. But that obsessive drive feeds on information, and there's no better starting point than the Compleat Meadmaker.

You don't necessarily HAVE to buy this book before you kill a bottle of Carlo Rossi and start your first batch of JAOM in a closet, but you should. Short of a meadmaking buddy who knows the ropes (or access to r/mead, who will also tell you to buy this book), this book is the best source of information you can get your hands on.

Now, I don't share Ken's thing for sour cherries, but I'll tell you this: that braggot recipe, the Don't Cry for Me, Spargentina? Yeah. That's a good recipe. And by good I mean two cases of it made me the most popular and least remembered person at every event I brought it to. Get brewing, learn, and drink like a viking!
