About the Author
INNOSANTO NAGARA's new-wave board books encourage children to grow up with confidence in themselves, and to be proactive citizens who are passionate about causes from environmental issues to LGBTQ rights and civil rights. Nagara was born and raised in Indonesia, and moved to the US in 1988. After studying zoology and philosophy at UC Davis, he moved to the San Francisco Bay Area, where he worked as a graphic designer for a range of social change organizations, before founding the Design Action Collective, a worker-owned cooperative design studio in Oakland, California.

Great Art, Great Message, Somewhat Inconsistent and Confusing

Love the book and the premise but I was a little confused by one of the pages. Amazon didn't offer a "look inside" option for this book like it did for the author's other book, A For Activist. Because I liked the art and style of A for Activist so much, I decided to just add this book to the order despite not being able to see inside.

Not all the pages have the number clearly printed in a predictable way for children to recognize - something I initially overlooked when I received it because it seems challenging to hunt down the message on each page and probably useful for them to recognize the many different forms that numbers come in. Upon further inspection, there are just several very confusing aspects of this book. While I love the art, it is definitely not your standard number book.

The number two page references "neighbor friends" but there are 6 people on the page (all mostly in groups of two, all of them potentially "neighbor friends"). Two kids playing in the street, two parents, two babies in strollers. There are also two cars, two trees, two shadows, two birds.

The number 5 page has 5 chunks of chalk clearly piled right in the foreground of the picture, under the text. But wait! There's one more chunk of chalk in the child's hand. That makes 6 chunks of chalk on the page. And this will be important later.

The number 7 page is the most confusing of all. The text reads "Seven bikes and scooters and helmets to share". I have a lot to say about this page. First. There are 5 bikes and scooters in a pile with one helmet. So you've got 6. But there is also a kid away from the pile riding a scooter and wearing a helmet. So add those and you've got 8. My husband and I have tried and tried and we just can't get a total of 7 anything on this page. I also think it's worth noting that if there are x number of bikes and scooters "to share" there should be that number of helmets as well but I'm more concerned with the fact that there's not a total of 7 things on the number 7 page. I will include a picture of it for your review.

The 8 page has 8 picket signs. These "signs" are blank pieces of paper. Just 8 white rectangles situated throughout a mass of people in the foreground of the picture. If you were only looking at the foreground, that would be fine, but all the pages in this book leading up to this one have taught us to hunt down what we are looking for including sometimes stretching the imagination or including things that we did not perceive to be part of the picture. If you look in the background of the image, there are several people with actual picket signs that say things. So there are actually way more than 8 picket signs on the 8 page.

Overall, I give the book 4 stars because I value the art and the conversation-with-child aspect of evaluating what is on each page but I feel like as a fundamental numbers book, it is lacking in clarity and consistency and I just couldn't give it 5 stars.

I particularly like the pot luck spread

Bright and interesting pictures accompany one to 10 objects to count found when people in a community band together. I particularly like the pot luck spread. Right now my 18-month old granddaughter is especially concentrating on learning numbers but I can see that there is more to learn about such objects as a pi�ata, after she has mastered counting so the book will be valuable for several years.

these are the kind of books that I love to read to my grandsons

As a grandparent, these are the kind of books that I love to read to my grandsons. I have Innosanto's A is for Activist and was very impressed with both the text and the graphics. Counting on Community will not disappoint those who already have his other book, and for those who don't have it, I highly recommend it. I like Counting on Community as it not only introduces numbers to a small child but the text and graphics bring up a lot of generative themes, in the spirit of Paulo Freire and allows me to ask questions of my grandsons about what they think it means. I believe critical thinking starts at a very early age, and this is the sort of book that can be an excellent tool in developing those sorts of skills.

Can't wait to take test. This is just what I needed to round out my study materials. Great instructions on what to do, and how to do it. I have the whole set. Each one comes with a thank you not from the author. Very nice touch and very classy.

An excellent teacher

I am a novice blacksmith, but Mark Aspery is an excellent teacher and this book covers the fundamentals of blacksmithing quite well.

He begins with safety and then moves into the fundamental tools - anvil and anvil stand, vice stand, hammer styles - and how to use them properly. He emphasizes the importance of square-octagon-round tapering. Throughout he uses humor and interesting examples which stick with you through the learning process.

Following the above introduction he moves into tools and how to craft them - various chisels, punches and drifts. Several of these are specialized tools that are to be used for the later projects in the book. At the end of the tool section he discusses the basics of heat treatment.

The latter two-thirds of the book are all projects from Wizard Bottle Opener to various tongs and a simple knife blank. Some of the projects are more tools, including scrolling tongs and some bottom tools and a few more tongs.

I'm very happy with this purchase so far. The book is abundantly illustrated with black & white photographs as well as a few drawings and graphs. After purchasing the book, I was lucky enough to attend a conference at which Mr. Aspery was giving a demonstration. His teaching ability there was as well-balanced as withing his writing. He is able to educate both novice and advanced blacksmiths simultaneously without making novices feel that they are being talked over while giving more advanced students additional insight into skills they already have.

The first modern Blacksmith Textbook

This is the text book we use at out blacksmithing school in Los Angeles. It covers all the topics required for the Level 1 certificate from the California Blacksmith Association. There is truly no better book on blacksmithing. You will learn both the practical and theoretical aspects of forming metal. It covers tool making and many impressive projects.

Topics include how to hold and use the hammer, including how to modify the handle so you stop getting blisters.

Tool making includes chisels, punches, scrolling wrench, drifts, hardy tools, and lots of different tongs.

Projects include a wizard bottle opener, wizard hook, forge welding, spatula, ladle, fork, spoon, and knife.

The author sells this on his website for $63. So Google him and order it directly.

The Absolute Wonder of Beauty and Grace

Beautiful cover, reference and a wonderful overall version of the classic King James. This is now my 3rd NKJV bible I have purchased and it was so worth the price. I love the New King James Version because it captures what we all loved of the Old King Jimmy without losing the beauty and majesty of the classic. The words and phrases of our beautiful holy scriptures have been watered down over the years with all these new versions coming out, most especially this New International Version which to me just seems to lessen the value of the Word of God. I love this NKJV because it is easy to read and too understand. The commentaries and history that shows up all through the NKJV only help you truly appreciate this work of art.
This NKJV is an absolute for anyone who has ever loved the beauty and richness of the Old King James and makes this NKJV hard to put down.

This is an amazing bible. There are tons of maps, notes/commentaries on almost every single scripture, timelines, charts, graphs, historical set pieces, and information on the technology of that age. There is an introduction to every book telling about the author, period, an outline of the book, and how that book pertains to Christ. There are also star shapes in the books indicating biblical prophecy and, specifically, whether the prophecy is being foretold or fulfilled. This bible also contains tons (15,000 to be exact) of cross referenced scripture and many different translations of different words giving you deeper meaning of the scripture. Italisized words let you know that those specific words were added in the translation from Hebrew/Aramaic/Greek to English. Most of the words are "the", "was", "to", "there", etc. Nothing major, but a nice feature. Theres lots of good stuff here.

The bible is top quality from cover to cover and inside out. The type face is a nice black without being too much contrast with the white page. The color is a pleasure to look at and is a comfortable size with a light blue background where the notes and cross references are making the page very soft on the eyes. The layout is very easy to follow and is very user friendly. The scripture and notes are in two different type faces and points making them both flow very well together and seperately. Theres also a very nice history of the KJV and NKJV of the bible in the introduction as well as other histories and facts on different things in the introduction.

The outside of the bible is your typical bonded leather. However, I think this is a better quality than most, but thats just me. The bronze version isnt as bronze as the picture suggests. Its actually more dulled/ faded looking than the picture. Nonetheless, I still love the look of the bronze and how it feels in my hands. The outside of the pages are lined with a shiny gold tint making it look very nice with the bronze cover (I believe all the bonded leather versions are gold outlined, white outlined for the hard covers, and silver for the fake leather/ designer style versions). There are no markings on the front cover or rear cover indicating its a bible, even though its obvious thats what it is, but the front and rear covers are just plain bonded leather. The spine of the bible has "NKJV Holy Bible" written in gold inlay lettering and I beleive it also has "Nelson" (the publisher) written on the spine near the bottom as well, not positive on this though. The bible weighs between 4-5 pounds and is a bigger sized bible thats not too thick.

Overall, this is a great product with TONS of great study notes, maps, charts, commentaries, information on each book and the period it takes place in. People who have a hard time reading regular sized bible font (8pt.) may have difficulty reading this bible. However, there is a large print version. My only gripe with this bible is page quality. To cut down on thickness and weight the publisher made the pages very thin. You can see whatevers on the next page before actually turning the page. Although its not nearly as bad as those cheap small bibles churchs give out for free, its still a small nuisance. The pages also make me feel like I may accidently rip them or mangle them when flipping back and fourth between NT and OT cross referenced scripture, but this has yet to happen and is just my personal opinion. All in all I HIGHLY recommend this bible to anyone looking for extended knowlege and/or a better understanding on God's holy Word.

I would give this 4.5/ 5 stars due to the page thinness. However, the minor drawback of this near perfect bible should not sway your mind in the least if you still undecided. In my personal opinion I think this is the best study bible available.

Nice Bible, But Don't Love the Cover Material

Ok, breaking things down into three categories.

Translation – Four Stars
The New King James version is an update of the older King James Version. The new update removes antiquated language (thee, thou, etc.) and improves grammar. However it still sounds very familiar to those familiar with the KJV. Most scholars tend to agree that overall it is an accurate translation, but that the underlying text the Textus Recepetus may not be the best. The differences between more widely accepted texts are generally minor and have no real impact on significant theological issues, but it’s worth mentioning.

Study Notes – Four Stars
Obviously I haven’t read each note, but in general they seem pretty good sort of moderate to conservative evangelical. They did seem to avoid some more controversial issues which seem to be why you might want to reference study notes. There are additional helps like word studies, short articles, charts, maps and a nice concordance. Overall these study notes should be a help to most people.

Physical Construction – Three Stars
The description does clearly states that this is imitation leather, but I was expecting something just a little nicer. I assumed this meant the material used in other Bibles called Duo-Tone. However, this is more like a thin embossed plastic glued to cardboard. It looks and feels cheap. In all honesty I was so disappointed I considered returning it, but the reality is this is nice enough for just a little over forty bucks. The remaining construction seems pretty nice and the general look and layout of the pages is very usable. The paper is of nice quality and not too thin as Bible paper sometimes is.

Overall 3.67 Stars (rounded up to four)
This is a good Study Bible and should serve you well as an additional study aid. If you’re looking for a nice Bible sort of an heirloom type item I would definitely consider something else due to the cover material. Also, you might save a little money and get the hardback since this isn’t really that much nicer.

A sober account of a mired topic.

The basis of this book revolves around obscure texts of the little-known and enigmatic figure of Karl Maria Wiligut, a name that I had first encountered back in the early 90s from an interview with co-author Michael Moynihan. He expressed plans to publish Wiligut's writings and in 2001, Dominion press finally released The Secret King.
I acquired the limited hardbound edition upon the book's release and treated it as little more than a `curio', tucking it away as a soon-to-be rarity in my book collection. At the time, I acknowledged The Secret King as the first and only of its kind to examine the source of occult writings specifically related to the Third Reich, and left it at that.

This revised edition of The Secret King, released jointly by Feral House and Dominion, demands reappraisal as it contains an entirely expanded introduction to Wiligut's life and work. In addition, the new material is much broader in scope and examines the "bigger picture" of the post-war phenomenon of interest surrounding Nazi occultism. This aspect of the book alone makes the material more intriguing and noteworthy.

So, who would want to read about nearly century-old German mystical texts that were not widely distributed even during the historical era in which they were penned? Evidently, thousands of readers, as the authors assert judging from the sales of The Secret King's first edition that sold largely on word-of-mouth alone. More importantly, why would anyone want to peruse such material in the first place? Authors Moynihan and Flowers thoroughly address this monumental question in the book's first section, which examines the myths surrounding Nazi occultism. First, the vast majority of books on this nebulous subject trump sensationalism over scholarship in their often unscrupulous and unsubstantiated claims. One notable exception would be Nicholas Goodricke Clarke's The Occult Roots of Nazism but even its main premise that the early 20th century Ariosophists were a major influence on National Socialism is highly debatable. Secondly, the modern myth of Nazi occultism simply makes for compelling reading in the 21st century. Several factors for the promulgation of this myth initially took form when American and British citizenry alike where still taking a strong isolationist stance on the possibility of yet another war with Germany. Winston Churchill and his advisor Walter Johannes Stein played no small role in demonizing the German people, Stein espousing the creation of a World Economy - thus effectively driving a wedge between Britain and the National Socialists, who were in favor of abolishing usury. Essentially, the Allied crusade against the National Socialists was initially, largely due to this economically unacceptable idea!

Adolf Hitler is mentioned in this section of the book, and for one to assume that he was using or being used by occult forces to account for his rise to power is the same dubious logic used to propagate the notion that the Egyptians must have been in contact with extra-terrestrial forces in constructing the pyramids. Furthermore, Mein Kampf is loaded with biblical references and the major spiritual current underlying the Third Reich was Christianity. Not surprisingly, the postwar phenomenon of Christian and Roman Catholic exoneration of Nazi atrocities has only further bolstered the perceived aura of demonic or occult forces underlying the Third Reich. As for the Pagan and non-Christian spiritual currents that did exist (albeit to a small degree overall) within the Third Reich, The Secret King gives a fascinating overview of a number of individuals, many of whom were at one time or another well-received in Nationalist Socialist circles. Herman Wirth and Italian esotericist Julius Evola are mentioned (among several other prominent figures), all of whom eventually fell out of favor with the regime. In addition, postwar sympathizers Savitri Devi and Miguel Serrano are discussed at length as well, whose lives and work prove to be as interesting as they were controversial.

The reality of Nazi occultism, although far less sensational than the mythic aspect, is no less intriguing. Wiligut had an obscure and checkered past before being inducted into the SS under the nom de guerre Karl Maria Weisthor by none other than Reichsf�hrer-SS Heinrich Himmler - himself an enthusiast of pre-historic German nationalism. It is interesting that such a high-ranking official in National Socialist Germany would have an interest in esoteric matters and consequently, an affinity for Wiligut's meta-historical teachings. One can safely assume that had it not been for Himmler, Wiligut would have never held an official rank in the SS.

As for Wiligut's texts, they were either composed in poetic verse (often accompanied by runes or runic formulas) or appeared in the form of articles, many of which were published during the 30s under the pseudonym Jarl Widar for Hagal, the journal of the Edda Society. Other entries merely served as "memos" to be presided over by Heinrich Himmler. It is beyond the scope of this review to provide an analysis of Wiligut's work, and his non-linear continuum of ideas and concepts cannot be fully digested with a cold reading. Collin Cleary's critical appraisal of Wiligut's philosophy and in-depth coverage of the first text, "The Nine Commandments of G�t", (listed in the newly expanded bibliography) is highly recommended.

A crucial pre-cursor to gleaning insight into Wiligut's runology can be accessed in a visual schematic of two intersecting poles (forming a cross), the horizontal pole representing matter and the vertical pole representing spirit. Consciousness, form and life thus arise at the poles' intersection. The dynamic or circulatory function along the vertical pole allows for the interaction of spirit, matter and energy in regenerative cycles. This `Runic-key' concept is the backbone of Wiligut's "Whispering of Gotos - Rune-Knowledge" and is introduced by the authors in the first section of the book. Further treatment of this essential concept to Wiligut's verbiage is provided in Gabriele Dechend's article for Hagal, "The Cosmos in the Conception of Our Ancestors". It is included in the Appendices and contains numerous diagrams elaborating upon Wiligut's circulatory runology.

As a long-time astronomy enthusiast, Wiligut's article "Zodiacal Signs and Constellations" (from Hagal 12) was particularly interesting for me personally. Wiligut, writing as Jarl Widar, speaks with much zeal and fervor regarding the astronomical phenomenon of the precession of the equinoxes, a 25,920-year cycle where twelve constellations pass through and invisible arc that stretches across the night sky. This enormous time-period, referred to by Wiligut as the "great solar year", has a significant role in Mithraic iconography and is a referential staple of John Major Jenkins's popular books on Mayan cosmology and the 2012 phenomenon.

A new addition to this book that did not appear in the first edition of The Secret King is the Gotos-Kalanda, a poem based on the yearly course of twelve months and their relationship to natural cycles that occur within them. Even in English translation, the poem reads beautifully and integrates Wiligut's unique vision of Got-mythology.

Overall, it would appear to be that The Secret King is the last word on Nazi occultism but a growing interest in Wiligut and subsequent books that have appeared since the first edition have proved otherwise. More importantly, The Secret King certainly raises the bar for any future works on the subject - and is a benchmark that will continue to separate the wheat from the chaff in this largely misunderstood topic.

Some unique insights into Himmler and the SS

This is an expanded and updated version of the earlier edition of this work. A major change is the addition of an essay called "Myth of Nazi Occultism". This makes up the first part of the book. This is well worth reading and a healthy correction to some of the more ridiculous fantasies about Hitler and the occult.

Both authors are well-informed about these subjects. However, a weakness of their analysis is the failure to place the real aspects of the connection between the SS and the world of pre-Christian Germany in the context of over 100 years of study and fascination with the subject inside Germany. This is discussed in the beginning of The Jung Cult : Origins of a Charismatic Movement. For example, it is very hard to conceive of Adolf Hitler without Richard Wagner and his spectacular operas devoted to Germany's ancient pagan past. See Wagner's Hitler: The Prophet and His Disciple. In our time there is a growing interest in the pre-Christian world not only in the west but throughout Latin America. It is important to note however that those who don't like Christianity don't always agree on an alternative. An interesting question is whether these various movements might come together in a common cause such as the protection of the environment.

A mystery in the study of Nazi Germany which remains unresolved is the level of interest in German paganism of Hitler, himself. Hitler's views on this are ambiguous. There are quotes where he ridiculed some of Himmler's views here. However, this must be taken with caution. Himmler's views were very controversial in Germany. If Hitler really did not share Himmler's views, why did he allow them to become such an integral part of the SS?

The authors have a lot of experience in studying the subject as well as modern popular culture. Michael Moynihan has not only written on paganism and political philosophy but has also written the most popular book on the world of black metal music, Lords of Chaos: The Bloody Rise of the Satanic Metal Underground. Dr. Flowers runs an institute on ancient Germanic studies called the Woodharrow Institute. You can find it by searching on Google. He has also written a book about Guido von List called The Secret of the Runes. Margaret Phelan sits as a tribunal judge in the First-tier Tribunal. She has edited the Immigration Law Handbook since the first edition.


James Gillespie practised as a barrister specialising in immigration, asylum, and nationality law for 16 years before retiring from the bar in 2009. He has also taught and lectured widely on immigration law. During his years of practice he was recognised as one of the leading practitioners in the field of immigration law by the Chambers and Partners Guide to the UK Legal Professions. Prior to going to the bar he spent 7 years working for the Joint Council for the Welfare of Immigrants, advising on immigration law and representing clients in immigration appeals. He was a founder member of the Immigration Law Practitioners Association and served on its executive committee until 1992.

Margaret Phelan and James Gillespie have produced what Blake J has described as a ‘trusted and indispensable source’ of reference for materials on Immigration and Asylum Law. Published by the Oxford University Press, this is the new ninth edition of a long established and highly regarded work, which, in one substantial volume, of almost 2,000 pages, provides all the key materials required by the busy immigration law practitioner who needs to stay up to date with all recent developments -- – and these are considerable. There have been some twenty-one Statements of Changes to the Immigration Rules since the last edition of this book, as the authors point out.

Certainly there have been substantial changes to existing legislation brought about by the Immigration Act 2014, which, as the authors also point out, introduces new restrictions on access to housing, as well as other facilities and services. It has also wrought significant changes to the existing law affecting detention, enforcement, marriage, deprivation of citizenship and more besides. Note that the text of the Immigration Act 2014 is contained in this volume, together with the resulting changes to existing legislation, notably the Immigration Act 1971 and the Nationality, Immigration and Asylum Act 2002.

Also included are the Immigration Rules (revised to incorporate changes announced in October 2014)…. new EU regulations… new Procedure Rules for the First-tier Tribunal… Procedure Rules for the Upper Tribunal… and changes to EEA regulations.

As global considerations are now of prime importance in this area of law, it is most useful for practitioners that the Handbook also contains, in addition to European Materials and Statutory Instruments, a section of almost 300 pages of International Materials, in particular the UNHCR Handbook on Procedures and Criteria for determining Refugee Status, which provides the most recent guidance on refugee claims. The Convention on Rights of the Child -- and other conventions on human rights, torture, and stateless persons -- are included in this section.

It is important to emphasize that one of the major strengths of this Handbook is that it covers both recent new legislation and the existing legislation that precedes it. The result is a highly efficient and reliable reference tool for Asylum and Immigration Tribunal judges and of course, barristers, solicitors and other advisers practising in the areas of immigration, asylum and human rights law. No professional involved in immigration issues should be without a copy of this authoritative work for Conferences or court work.

About the Author

Eric Carter is a development manager on the Visual Studio team at Microsoft. He helped invent, design, and implement many of the features that are in VSTO today. Previously at Microsoft he worked on Visual Studio for Applications, the Visual Studio Macros IDE, and Visual Basic for Applications for Office 2000 and Office 2003.

Eric Lippert’s primary focus during his twelve years at Microsoft has been on improving the lives of developers by designing and implementing useful programming languages and development tools. He has worked on the Windows Scripting family of technologies, Visual Studio Tools for Office, and, most recently, on the C# compiler team.

poor explanation on Excel event inplementation

I am an experienced Excel vba programmer. I was very surprised to find out that in C# vsto that you have to program every Excel event.

Out of desperation I bought this book hoping to find out how to do this in C#. The excel events chapter was hard to read. Clearly showing how to implement Excel events should have been the first thing the authors should have done in this chapter. I did not find the answer in this book.

I spent the whole day searching the internet and finally stumbled on to the answer.

Awesome!!! Simply Awesome!!!!

This book is awesome. It covers everything you need to know to develop professional level VSTO applications with Visual Studio 2008.

I am glad this book was written using C# as a programming language. In the past VBA left a lot to be desired, enough so that I never took Office programming serious at all. When 2003 came out it sparked my interest, but I ran into enough pain right out of the box to drop it fast. This book has renewed my hope that I can start taking Office application seriously. By using C# the authors reaffirmed this is not VBA anymore. Had I browsed this book and found it to be written in VB.NET I would not have given Office 2007 VSTO another shot, because I would have thought the toolset was still lost in the VBA world.

For VB'ers... the authors do point out the differences in VB and C# where appropriate, they just do not provide code samples of each.

There are still a lot of traces of the crazy COM programming interfaces in the interops, but this book does a great job of pointing them out and shows you how to work with them. The "missing" and "ref missing" make the most elegant code look psychotic. It will be nice to have the C# 4.0 named and optional arguments feature to remedy the "missing" and "ref missing" messes.

The one complaint I have is about the code library that goes along with the book. There isn't one. The only thing made available is word documents that have the code listings from the Chapters cut and pasted from the book's manuscript.

All in all I do not think anyone developing VSTO should be without this book, and those that aren't developing VSTO should buy the book to educate themselves about the value the technology now provides.

Great Reference Book

Great reference book -- enough that I bought both the paperback and kindle verions. It provides a ton of insight into VSTO tools and how to approach building VSTO add-ins.

However, it is a more of a reference book than a learn to code book. So, the examples are very specifically focused to buidling a particular Add-In ... vice building an entire project of inter-related functions.

But, it is a must have for anyone developing VSTO add-ins.
