About the Author
MIKE COLLINS is best known as the penciller on the Panini Doctor Who Magazine. He is the storyboard artist for Doctor Who, has illustrated two Doctor Who graphic novels, and has drawn for the US IDW Doctor Who series. Mike has been creating comics for over 25 years and has worked for Marvel, DC, 2000AD and a whole host of other publishers. He currently draws a series of noir crime fiction graphic novels -- Varg Veum -- in Norse and provides storyboards for TV and films, including Doctor Who, Warhammer 40K, Igam Ogam, Claude, Hana's Helpline and Horrid Henry. He lives in Cardiff, Wales and his studio is a short walk away from The Rift. He has a wife, three daughters, a neurotic cat and is an enthusiastic yet staggeringly inept dancer.

Fantastic Designs but printed double-sided and across two pages makes it less than friendly for the colorist

Rather than discuss how this is like or different from the TV series, I will discuss only how I feel about it as an adult coloring book.
While the book has great designs, it also has a number of issues that make it difficult to work with. I dithered between a three star and four star rating but went with four because the designs are really extraordinarily good.
The designs are fantastic for coloring. They are well drawn with a nice level of detail where I want it and a lack of detail where I would prefer to add my own shading, etc. It feels a little weird to be coloring the faces of actual individuals (and those who have spent many an hour in my house albeit on my television screen.) Using the coloring tools that will work best with this book, I will have fun with it. Maybe do a little Andy Warhol riff with unusual colors on some of the characters.
Physically, the book is well made. The front and back covers flip out with a scene of London that can be colored. The designs are printed on both sides of the page. The pages are a good heavyweight and white; however, they are not perforated. The sewn rather than glued, so removing the pages from the book involves snipping several strings in a couple of places. Most of the designs span across two pages and merge into the binding. Though I will remove the pages from the book, it may be difficult to line up pages and that makes coloring in this book less fun. As there are so many of these designs that will be effected, I have detracted a star from an otherwise good book.
My particular book had two issues which may not be in others. On a number of pages, my double sided images did not line up. That happens sometimes. The other problem with my book was that there were four rippled pages. Amazon is replacing my book as it was obviously damaged in printing. I am not taking away points for this as mistakes can happen and it is being fixed for me.
All of my markers, both water and alcohol-based, leaked through the page. None of my gel pens bled through to the back of the page. My colored pencils all worked well on the surface of the paper. Given this, I would not recommend using markers in this book if you want to color each page as you will definitely ruin the design on the back of the page otherwise.
In summary, a coloring book filled with great designs but which has a number of physical issues. The book could have been improved in a number of ways, such as printing on one side only and if not, using a better grade of paper which allows markers to be used without seeping through to the backside. Perforated pages would have been nice. But the real improvement would have been to have less designs that span two pages. If you must do this, 1) make sure the images line up properly and 2) give us some room at the bound edge to be able to get our pencils and pens in to draw.

Like the drawings, just not the format

The drawings are nice, but I don't like the format. Some of the drawings take up two pages, but it seems like the focus of some of the pictures is cut in half by the center of the book. I'm not sure how I'm going to color some of these. I was hoping I'd be able to cut the pages out, and either color them flat, or scan then and print off copies onto printer paper so I could color some of the pictures more than once. (I was kind of wanting to put some of the colored pages in frames for my wall when I was finished)
The pictures are printed on both sides of the page, which also will probably keep me from using any markers on them for fear of the ink bleeding through and ruining the pictures on the next page. (the paper seems fairly thick, but some of my markers have gone thru thick paper)
I would have liked this better if the pictures were printed on only one side of the page, and that they hadn't put some of the drawings on two pages. It ruins the look of the artwork.
EDITED TO ADD PICTURES
If you look at Amazon's pictures of the artwork, one of them shows the scene of Sherlock and Mycroft playing Operation. Their example shows what looks like an entire page, and probably would have been fun to color if that's what it looked like in real life. I included a picture of what it actually looks like in the book, along with another picture of an example of Sherlock on the roof of St Bart's.
They put the center of the pictures into the middle of the pages. It totally ruins any enthusiasm that I would have had to color the pictures.
At least the pages with the Wall That Had It Coming wallpaper seem to be coloring friendly to me, because that's one of the things I really wanted to color.

Returning do to very poor layout! What were they thinking?

Pre-ordered this (before there were any reviews or screenshots) and am returning it immediately. Designs are printed right to the edges of the page, disappearing into the center binding which means you cannot complete any page. And since most scenes span dual pages, the best you can do with these is color most of the left side, leave an uncolor-able center stripe, and then do most of the right half of the scene. Binding is such that book will neither lay flat or can it be disassembled into 'full' pages without cutting away a section of printed illustration. Basically, therefore, unusable. Seems like a rookie layout mistake; why didn't the illustrator or publisher notice?
