Drei von vierzehn Stadtvierteln werden v�llig zerst�rt, sieben sind unbewohnbar. Tausende Menschen verlieren alles, was sie besa�en. Doch was war die Ursache f�r diese verheerende Katastrophe? Seit fast 2000 Jahren besch�ftigen sich Historiker mit genau dieser Fragestellung. Eine der �ltesten und detailliertesten Schilderungen der Ereignisse findet sich bei dem antiken Geschichtsschreiber Publius Cornelius Tacitus, der zum Zeitpunkt des Brandes zehn Jahre alt gewesen ist. Neben der �berlieferung bei Tacitus wird der Brand auch in anderen antiken Quellen geschildert, deren Autoren den Brand jedoch alle nicht pers�n-lich miterlebt haben k�nnen. Dazu geh�ren u. a. Sueton mit seiner Nero-Vita und Cassius Dio mit seiner R�mischen Geschichte, deren Werke mit denen des Tacitus in dieser Arbeit verglichen werden sollen. Problematisch ist dabei allerdings die Intention, mit denen die drei genannten Autoren geschrieben haben. Sie stammen alle aus der senatorischen Geschichtsschreibung und m�ssen daher entsprechend kritisch gelesen und bewertet werden. Da sich alle Autoren bereits auf andere Quellen beziehen, m�ssen ihre Werke zudem als Sekund�rquellen eingestuft werden.Weitere m�gliche Schriftquellen w�ren Plinius der �ltere mit seinem Werk naturalis historia und der Satiriker Juvenal. Einen guten �berblick �ber die verschiedenen Quellen findet man wenn auch schon sehr alt bei Kurfess .Das Ziel dieser Arbeit soll es sein, die Darstellung von Tacitus, Sueton und Cassius Dio auf ihren Wahrheitsgehalt zu �berpr�fen, dabei die Interpretationen der modernen For-schung zu ber�cksichtigen, um somit eine m�gliche Antwort auf die Frage nach der Ursache des Brandes zu entwickeln. Dabei sollen die drei Autoren zun�chst getrennt voneinander betrachtet werden, um sie anschlie�end m�glichst effektiv und geb�ndelt miteinander vergleichen zu k�nnen.In der modernen Forschung haben sich drei wesentliche Forschungsmeinungen zu dieser Frage entwickelt. Einige wenige Historiker schlie�en sich den antiken Quellen an, die Nero die Schuld am Brand Roms geben. Gegenargumente dazu finden sich vor allem bei Robichon, Grant und Scheda. Eine weitere Interpretationsm�glichkeit ist es, den Christen die Schuld an dem Brand zu geben, so wie es z. B. Bishop, Grant und Schwier getan haben. Am h�ufigsten findet sich jedoch die Meinung, dass der Brand zuf�llig ausgebrochen sei, z. B. bei Robichon und Hanslik.
