About the Author
Brian L. Smith has worked since 1997 as a CAD manager and animation specialist in architectural, engineering, and landscaping firms. Since 2001, he has led his own company specializing in the production of architectural animations and renderings in 3ds max. He is the cofounder of 3DAS and CGschool, where he teaches. Brian is also an active-duty member of the armed forces.

Great Resource For New Users or Long Time Users

I got this book about a month ago and it has been a great help. I was looking for a book that went into depth on setting up scenes for Architectural Renderings and this book has delivered. For me the best information was in the vegetation section, I have learned a ton of quick ways to create full landscapes around my buildings that are not only fast and easy but look great when rendered.

We design our buildings on Revit so I haven't really used any of the building generation tutorials at all but I am sure that they are just as good.

The only bad thing that I will say about this book is that it does require you to be somewhat familiar with working in 3ds Max. There were a couple things that I struggled with when trying to implement their techniques, most of the tutorial scenes are prepared for you a little too much and they don't go over some of the basics even though they may not be self explanatory.

The only other thing is that some of the techniques don't work well with Mental Ray (possibly other rendering engines like v ray as well) due to a change in how light works. One that stumped me for a long time was using 4 opposing lights to illuminate criss cross vegitation, the mr sun was much too bright and overpowered my fill lights. I was almost pulling my hair out when I found someone else with the same problem through google and as soon as I knew the cause I was able to fix it properly.

Excellent 3d Viz Book

This is one of the best 3d modeling books I have ever bought. It is very in depth and has a huge amount of real world experience informing it. If you are looking at 3d visualization for your skill set this is the book for you.

I think this book its a great oportunity to realize your level of 3d visualization, if already know this stuff it means that you are in a advanced level, and i realize that i have a very long way to achieve knowledge regarding 3d visualiztion. Great book!

About the Author
Carol Seefeldt, Ph.D. is a profressor emeritus of Human Development at the Institute for Child Study, University of Maryland, College Park. In her 28 year career she has received the Distinguished Scholar-Teacher Award from the university and has published 20 books, including Playing to Learn and more than 150 articles for teachers and parents. Dr. Seefeldt's research interests have focused on curriculum and program evaluation.

About the Author

Dr. George S. Tselikis received his Dipl–Ing and his PhD from the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering of National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) in 1993 and 1997, respectively. In 1998, he joined the COMET group in the Center for Telecommunications Research at Columbia University, New York and worked as a postdoc research associate. He was a founding member of 4Plus S.A. (1999-2013), where he worked in the development of network protocols and services. He has a long working experience in the telecom area, and his research interests focus on software specification, development, and testing of network protocols and services in wired and wireless networks. During his professional career, he has collaborated with big players in the telecom industry like Siemens, Nokia, and Alcatel. Since 2004, he has been a visiting lecturer in several Greek universities and technical institutes. He teaches courses related to network technologies, protocols and communications, as well as the C language.

Dr. Nikolaos D. Tselikas received his Dipl–Ing and his PhD from the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering of National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) in 1999 and 2004, respectively. His research interests focus on the specification and implementation of network services and applications. He has participated in several European and national research projects in this field. During his involvement in the research projects, he has collaborated in software design and development topics with big players in the telecom industry like Ericsson, Siemens, Alcatel, and Vodafone. He has served as a visiting lecturer in the Department of Informatics and Telecommunications, University of Peloponnese, Greece, since 2006 and was appointed lecturer in 2009. He currently serves as an assistant professor at the same university, where he teaches courses related to applications’ programming and network services, as well as the C language.

Absolutely amazing book

Very well-written, and concise. It took 26 years but finally we have a competitor to the gold standard of C programming books (K&R).

Unlike K&R, this book is for the programmers who are just starting out. K&R gets very rigorous quickly and works best for individuals who have some experience with programming.

This book covers the latest versions of C, something that K&R (being 26 years old) does not address. It has many programming exercises with answers available within the book. Like K&R it is concise in its depiction of topics; but, seems to do so in a much better and clearer presentation manner.

It is just marvelous! I can't sign enough praises.

C From Theory to Practice. Tselikas

The novelty of this textbook is its rapid pace. Each topic is covered with a minimum of words, no chatty introductions or detailed explanations. This could appeal to impatient readers. The writing is quite clear, though I feel that too much is ignored. While the explanations are brief, the book is not thin, because there are lots of simple worked exercises. So the focus is really more on learning from the example code than from the explanations.

Important book, important topic.

I read this book in basically one sitting. It was a page-turner, in that I had to keep reading to find out how it would end. "End" is a funny word for the ending because the author Baby Halder is still so young with a long life ahead of her. This is a phenomenal book, not just because it tells Baby's story, but because it tells a story that millions of women around the world share. And we need to hear this story. And what makes it more phenomenal is that the author was able to break free from abuse and poverty to write an internationally published book and share her story of a life less ordinary.

I spent much of the book wondering how I could've dealt with the loss of my mother or the tolerated murder of my sister or the unimagineable thought of my 12 year old daughter getting married and having children, or if I would've had the courage to get on a train with my children and nothing more to try to find a better life.

An issue with the writing in this book is that the author frequently switches from 1st to 3rd person, but I looked at it like less of a grammatical error and more of the author speaking in 3rd person when the topic was very painful. I really highly recomend this book.

Really wanted to love this novel but couldnt even finish it.....

I feel horrible for giving this book a bad rating, but I want to be as honest as possible with my reviews. I really wanted to love this book, for the author's life and everything she had to endure is truly remarkable. I also thought this would be an important book to read as a woman, due to the main theme of how women are treated in other parts of the world. I just had a very hard time reading it because it was so poorly written, so choppy and confusing at times (i.e., going from one type of narrative to another - writing in first person to writing about herself in the third person; confusing dialogue; and paragraphs that seemed to end at times without continuing the thought or story. While I acknowledge how amazing it is for someone who came from such a difficult upbringing and little education to have written a novel that not only got published, but is beloved in so many countries, I wish there was a lot more editing, so that her story could have been told more fluidly, as it truly is a story to be told and shared with the world. Perhaps it was lost in translation somehow when transcribed from Hindi into English?
Regardless, I did not personally like this book, although the author's story is absolutely incredible and worth knowing about. Therefore, I can only recommend it with caution- if you can look psat the writing, you may enjoy it.

Yes, the style is basic, perhaps even crude, but Halder's sometimes halting prose is effective in communicating the pain and chaos of her life. The abrupt transitions between first and third person are very effective: they allow both the author and the reader some distance from painful introspections.
While there are many very distressing episodes, the book is basically hopeful. Allow this book to evoke empathy, and perhaps even motivate you to act on behalf of women, children, and/or the poor.

About the Author

B. Lautrup is a professor in theoretical physics at the Niels Bohr International Academy in the Niels Bohr Institute under the University of Copenhagen. He is also chairman of the Center for the Philosophy of Nature and Science Studies at the University of Copenhagen. His research interests include complex systems, fluid mechanics, and network theory.

This is the book I have been looking for.

Lautrup presents the material very clearly. He provides physical motivation, states assumptions underlying approximations, and develops the classical physics of solids and fluids concisely but thoroughly.

Dorothy Maclean fan for many years

Having been a Dorothy Maclean fan for many years, I was delighted to learn that her full-length autobiography -- five years in the writing -- has now been published.

The story, briefly, is this. Born in Canada, Dorothy trained as a secretary, then went to work for MI6 (the real-life James Bonds) in New York during the war. She traveled to almost every continent in the course of her duties, and after the war she settled in London. In the early 50s, while attending art school, she began to write down inspirational messages. In this she was encouraged by her friend Sheena Govan. Also part of Sheena's circle at that time were Peter Caddy and Eileen Combe.

In the late 50s, Dorothy, Peter, and Eileen spent a couple of years meandering from job to job and place to place before obtaining jobs at a hotel in the north of Scotland. There the three of them worked for five years, receiving divine guidance on how to live their lives, and carrying out spiritual practices as their time allowed in the evenings.

When they lost their jobs, the three moved to a trailer park near the village of Findhorn, not far from the hotel where they had been working. Though confused by the situation, they continued living and meditating together as before. As their sensitivity increased in this isolated location, Dorothy began to connect with nature on an energy level. A garden they had started then flourished as they learned to cooperate with nature, and intrigued visitors began to settle near them, eventually forming a community. Dorothy would remain in the community near Findhorn until 1973, when she joined a group returning to North America. Since then, she has lectured and written on her experiences.

The book fills in the details and lines of connection that are missing from To Hear the Angels Sing. Having spent a week with Dorothy and Freya Secrest at Johnson's Landing, I could hear each sentence in Dorothy's voice. Her sense of humor comes across, too. I particularly laughed at her remark about Peter Caddy at the bottom of page 27, and her account of taking minutes of imaginary board meetings on page 110.

An appendix gives the exercises she includes in her workshop for receiving guidance. At the back of the book are some photographs, many from the 20s and 30s, along with the oil paintings she made of her parents. I can see what she means when she says that, had events turned out differently, she might have established herself as a professional portrait painter. Also included is a scan of the certificate of employment she received from William Stephenson. And, since the book offers encouragement to those wishing to live by guidance, perhaps the last word on Dorothy, Peter, and Eileen ought to go to their former mentor, Sheena Govan: "If you three can make the inner connection to God, anybody can" (p. 111).

Most readable book I've come across in years.

Dorothy was a founder of the Findhorn Garden. This is partly the story of how she made contact with the local 'plant spirits', but it's also a wonderful adventure about what living an unconventional life was like in the mid 20th century. I don't tend toward new age books...but this is sort of the archetype. This is the ONE. It reminded me that magic is always close by.

Not so ordinary, this special woman

If you think you know all about Dorothy and Findhorn, and her worldwide work, you may be quite surprised how much there is to learn. I have enjoyed all her books, they are so readable about the most amazing things. I have learned from her at a workshop and she is wonderful!
I highly recommend this great book.

About the Author
Michael Phelps is an American swimmer.  He holds the record for winning the most gold medals (8) in a single Olympics (2008).  He has won 16 Olympic medals, 14 gold and two bronze.  He holds seven world records and has over 20 World Championship medals. After returning home from Beijing in 2008, Michael used the well-publicized $1 million dollar Speedo bonus to start the Michael Phelps Foundation through which he hopes to encourage children to lead healthy, active lives, and to continue to grow the sport of swimming.  He now resides in Baltimore, MD with his dog Herman.

Alan Abrahamson is an award-winning sportswriter and a recognized authority on the Olympics. In 2006, he left the Los Angeles Times, where he had been a staff writer for 17 years, to write for the NBC suite of online properties, which now includes NBCOlympics.com, NBCSports.com and UniversalSports.com. Since 2003, Alan has also served as a sports and Olympic analyst on NBC's television networks. Among other honors, Alan won the 2002 National Headliner Award for sports writing and was named the Los Angeles Press Club's 2004 sports journalist of the year. Alan and his wife, Laura, and their three children live in Southern California.

A Nice and Quick Motivational Book

This book was a nice and quick read. It is simply a motivational book by the worlds greatest swimmer: Michael Phelps. I was expecting more of a biography. Instead, the author takes us race by race throughout the entire 2008 Beijing Olympics, for a total of eight races/chapters. In each chapter it digresses to different parts of Phelps' life. In addition, each chapter has a different title geared towards achieving your goals.

Many times this book felt repetitive. It simply reinstates the same messages about setting goals, focusing and working hard to achieve them. Plus, I really didn't understand how many of the chapter titles stress that point in each chapter. It really felt like one repetitive message throughout the book. I also got lost many times throughout the technical points of swimming. You really need to be a hardcore fan to keep up with the different swim strokes, races, times, etc. (I guess Phelps underestimates the audience as most of us are not as familiar with swimming as he would like us to be).

The good part of the book is that it is not dragged out. Despite the points above, it is a brief and quick read. It is very manageable to quickly read through this book and get its overall message very clearly. I am one who loves motivation and inspiration, especially when it is given by someone that is very accomplished in his/her field. Therefore, if you want a quick reinforcing motivational tool, this book is for you. You can probably finish it in a few days or a week at most. Plus you'll get a glimpse at the life of probably the greatest swimmer in history.

REACH FOR IT MICHAEL IT'S YOURS !

This book like every one I have ever read about Michael Phelps is so inspirational. His life wasn't "a piece of cake". He made it what it is. I cannot imagine ever knowing of another athlete who observed a schedule like his from childhood. And in fact perhaps lost some of his childhood because of his goals. This to me is a really great person who deserves to reach the extreme highest honors.
