This is the first translation into English of an important early work of the German idealist philosopher F.W.J. Schelling. Philosophy and Religion (1804) is considered a precursor to his major work on freedom, his Philosophical Inquiries into the Nature of Human Freedom (1809). For Schelling, it is the task of philosophy to lead the soul towards the intuition of the Infinite: "All philosophy begins . . . with an animated idea of the Absolute." In recent years, Schelling's philosophical ideas have been adopted by contemporary thinkers such as the Slovenian philosopher and psychoanalytic theorist Slavoj Žižek and the French theorist of "Non- Philosophy," François Laruelle.

About the Author
Friedrich Wilhelm Joseph von Schelling (1775-1854), along with J.G. Fichte and G.W.F. Hegel, was one of the three most influential thinkers in the tradition of German Idealism. Among his philosophical works are First Outline of a System of the Philosophy of Nature (1799), System of Transcendental Idealism (1800), Philosophical Inquiries into the Nature of Human Freedom (1809), The Ages of the World (1813), and Philosophy of Mythology (1857).
Klaus Ottmann is a philosopher, writer, and curator based in New York. He has written numerous essays on art, design, and philosophy, and is the author of The Genius Decision: The Extraordinary and the Postmodern Condition; The Essentialâ„¢ Michelangelo; The Essentialâ„¢ Mark Rothko; Wolfgang Laib: A Retrospective; and James Lee Byars: Life, Love, and Death. He is the curator of the sixth SITE Santa Fe international biennial, which takes place between July and December 2006.
