Joy DivisionFrom Brand: Rizzoli

The definitive look at one of the most iconic rock bands of all time. Joy Division pioneered a genre of music and defined the look and sound of the post-punk era, and thirty years after the suicide of their lead singer Ian Curtis, they remain one of the most influential rock bands to have come out of England. Between their infamous live performances and two studio albums in the late 1970s, Joy Division set the Manchester scene alight, established Factory Records as the most influential label in pop music, and recorded some of the most enduring songs of the era. Kevin Cummins began his career just as the band formed, and for the few short years of their career was given closer access to them than any other photographer. Joy Division collects more than two hundred of his images of the band—sensitive photographs that capture their quiet introspection offstage, their close relationships as bandmates, and Curtis’s legendary energy in live performances—and supplements the iconic images with concert tickets, unreleased record sleeves, fan club badges, Factory Records flyers, and other rare ephemera. This book is the most definitive and heavily illustrated celebration of the band ever produced.

Review
"These photographs—all carefully constructed whites and blacks—are collected in 'Joy Division' (Rizzoli, 208 pages, $45). The book is a bleak and gorgeous counterpoint to the band's atmospheric sound. In the photo above, Curtis and Sumner pose in their rehearsal space in a dilapidated warehouse." ~Wall Street Journal

"Those photos are collected in a new book Joy Division (Rizzoli), which features dozens of previously unpublished pics of the band backstage and in rehearsals, plus shots of Curtis' journals and lyrics, and an introduction by author (and Joy Division super fan) Jay McInerney" ~SPIN

"The definitive look at one of the most iconic rock bands of all time" ~Hypebeast.com

"Cummins archive of Joy Division photographs, coupled with rare ephemera (including Ian Curtis’ own notebooks), forms the definitive monograph Joy Division. From composed shots in T.J. Davidson’s rehearsal room to raw live performance photos, and even portraits on the streets of Manchester, Cummins view of the band is broad and unfettered." ~Selectism.com

"Kevin Cummins, who took many iconic photos of the band, has compiled his shots of the Salford lads in Joy Division (Rizzoli, October)... Most powerful are Cummins's haunting portraits of future suicide Ian Curtis performing live, which practically vibrate with the singer's demonic intensity." ~Book Forum

Thank you for publishing this book!
By Shelley D. Brook
Fantastic! I am a huge Joy Division fan & I had to own a copy of this book once I found out about it. There are some amazing photos in this book. I wish there were more because there are so many great photos of Ian Curtis and the band floating around. I had the opportunity and honor of seeing Peter Hook perform "Unknown Pleasures" in Philly a few weeks ago. I can't thank him enough for giving the U.S fans the chance to experience Joy Division, finally. Anyway, this book is a must have for the fans.

Could have been a bit more
By Joren A. Lindholm
Evidently the point of the this hardcover book is to have a full-page blowup scale for the photographic prints. Overall, the book is unique in that it combines hitherto rare photos with many of the classic ones into a semi-narrative sequence. A portion of the newer pictures covers bits of JD memorabilia and acts as a nice prelude to the main segments.

Unfavorable aspects are: the print reproductions are all exactly the same size, which is monotonous. My preference is actually for JD books that have different sizes of prints. I was annoyed by the florescent orange color of the hardcover; it seems like an ode to New Order design and detracts from the focus on the time period. This orange is also the color of the text font, which I found visually hard to read.

This is a worthwhile book, full of stirring, mostly black and white photographs which portray Ian Curtis himself, and the group, in a balanced variety of contexts. The text includes an interview with Bernard Sumner that provides lots of details, as it should. However, the above-mentioned drawbacks, along with my wish that the length was more epic and less brief, make it simply a satisfactory companion to the other JD books.

This Is Permanence
By Michael
Gorgeous images of the band presented in sturdy binding and printed on quality stock. The dust jacket protects a little over half of the book and is attractive. I was a bit concerned that it might be subject to damage from handling, but it fits snugly and does not slide around. The book arrived tightly shrink wrapped as well, which protected it during shipment. This is a stunning volume that should please any fan of Joy Division. The book will stand up to repeated viewings in regards to both the content and the durability of the binding.
