What is nanotechnology? What does it do, and why is it expected to have a significant impact on our lives? These seemingly simple questions do not have easy, direct answers. There are so many aspects to nanotechnology that the uninitiated often find it challenging to begin to understand and appreciate it. Introduction to Nanoscience and Nanotechnology explains the basics in clear language, even to those who do not have a scientific background. It reveals the present state of the art and latest applications in nanotechnology, makes estimates of where the technology is headed, and predicts what will be possible in the future.

The book begins by addressing how small the nanometer length scale is in comparison to macroscopic objects and why it is special. From a discussion of naturally occurring nanoparticles and nanoparticles composed of carbon, the book then presents the tools of nanotechnology that can build, image, and manipulate nanostructures to build materials and devices (such as MEMS devices and scanning probe technologies), as well as one of the most exciting aspects of the field—combining Bottom-up and Top-down approaches so that individual nanostructures can be probed.

Readers will learn about artificially produced nanostructures that have a built-in functionality, such as magnetic nanoparticles that can store a data bit. They'll see how it is possible to produce biologically active nanoparticles that can interact with specific cells in the body, which can lead to powerful new treatments for diseases such as cancer. In addition, they'll discover the potential for building autonomous machines with nanoscale components—and how the tools of nanotechnology may one day lead to a deeper understanding of our universe.

About the Author
CHRIS BINNS, PhD, is Professor of Nanoscience in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Leicester, United Kingdom. He spent two years working at Synchrotron Radiation Sources (SSRL, Stanford and NSLS, Brookhaven) in the USA. Professor Binns then obtained a permanent academic post at the University of Leicester and continued synchrotron radiation experiments. In the last decade his research has focused on magnetic nanoparticles, and at present is moving into the new areas of biomedical applications of nanoparticles and in Casimir force measurements using scanning probe microscopes.

Only buy this book if you have intermediate understanding toward Nano-tech

I've had this book for 2 months now and I like this book because it's about nano-tech and well described of how atoms perform at the nano level. However, I also don't like this book because the author writes in a strong scientific vocabulary. After all this book is suppose to be a "Introduction" not a advance course in nano-tech. I'm a entrepreneur in this industry and new so if you're getting started in this nano-tech industry i would recommend you just learn from Youtube.

Lydia Brownback (MAR, Westminster Theological Seminary) serves as a senior editor at Crossway in Wheaton, Illinois, and an author and speaker at women’s conferences around the world. Review: Proverbs-A 12 Week Study

Since receiving this study back in August, I have spent a considerable amount of time going through Proverbs - A 12 Week Study and making notes for this review.

For starters, this isn't an "easy" study to do on your own. I would recommend this study for a group setting for adults. My home church is currently hosting another bible study on Thursday mornings from the series Knowing Your Bible, Proverbs is also apart of the Knowing Your Bible series by Crossway.

Each week, Proverbs invites the scholar (you) to study certain passages from Proverbs. The passages for weekly study range from one chapter or more. Each weekly section, there are questions to be answered about the passage not only to engage the scholar, but for a group discussion. I felt I got more out of the questions themselves than I did answering them on my own. Almost each question had a key point backed up by scripture allowing me to learn from the question, but still allowing me to answer the question with my own thoughts and opinions. Also, there are definitions at the bottom of most pages to clarify any words within the questions a scholar might not understand.

Towards the end of the study questions, there are four sections for the scholar to read over to help understand the bigger picture of the passage: Gospel Glimpses, Whole-Bible Connections, Theological Soundings, and Personal Implications. I think this part is the most enlightening to the learning scholar by showing how the passage fits in the grand scheme of the Bible, especially the Gospel Glimpses section.

For anyone who is starting to get serious about studying the bible-hands down this is the study for you. Be prepared to learn about scripture rather than applying it.

Long time coming, but not as good as I'd hoped.

It is surprising that no-one had published a book on the Steadicam before now. Even this one has been a long time coming. Italian author Serena Ferrara originally published this in 1997, and it was finally released this year in an English version. A Doctorate in "History & Cinema" and her curiosity about the Steadicam led her to write a thesis on the subject, which later became this book.
After a brief but well written overview of the history, types and function of camera movement, the book does an excellent job documenting the invention of the Steadicam … the evolution from first prototype to current models is shown in detail. This first section of the book covers basic principles of how the thing works, how it can be used together with it’s limitations, and gives early examples from films such as "Rocky" and "Marathon Man". The Steadicam didn’t really come of age until it was embraced by Stanley Kubrick on "The Shining" which is discussed at length.
The second section is called "Semiotics and Narrative" and leads into chapters such as "The Gaze of the Narrative Voice". Overall, there is a tendency to intellectualise, and this section in particular was a bit too bookish for me. However, many references to sources of information are given, along with an extensive bibliography, so perhaps this style can be forgiven.
The third section holds a series of interviews which is perhaps the most valuable contribution of the book. Inventor and master operator Garrett Brown naturally features, along with an excellent discussion by Larry McConkey on his extended shots in "Goodfellas" and "Bonfire of the Vanities" and with DP’s Haskell Wexler and Vittorio Storaro among others.
The book however, is limited by it’s concentration of the evolution of the Steadicam as a brand. From 1993, Garrett Brown’s original patents started to expire, allowing competitive manufacturers into the field. The most prominent of these, the PRO, is given scant recognition, others none at all, while the Panaglide ...is perhaps given more than it deserves. Important equipment such as remote lens controllers, gyro’s and antlers hardly rate a mention. Even Cinema Products’ own innovative "iso-elastic" arm is given little attention. The fact that CP went belly-up last year and the Steadicam product was acquired by Tiffen, is a glaring omission in itself.
Other grumbles? Not enough photo’s of the thing in action was a big disappointment, and many that do appear are 10-15 years out of date. The Techniques and Uses section of the book could also be much stronger ....

About the Author
Larry W. Mays is professor of civil and environmental engineering at Arizona State University and former chair of the department. He was formerly director of the Center for Research in Water Resources at the University of Texas at Austin, where he also held an Engineering Foundation Endowed Professorship. A registered professional engineer in seven states and a registered professional hydrologist, he has served as consultant to many organizations. Co-author of both Applied Hydrology and Hydrosystems Engineering and Management published by McGraw-Hill, and was the editor in chief of Reliability Analysis of Water Distribution Systems (ASCE), and co-editor of Computer Modeling of Free-Surface and Pressurized Flows (Kluwer Academic Publishers). He has published extensively on his research in water resources management.

Professional Library "must have"

This book is a great one-stop reference for engineers and designers involved in water distribution or piping networks. The topics are covered in sufficient detail, and if more information is needed, the relevant source is usually listed (e.g. AWWA publication # xxx) so the in-depth source can be found quickly.

An amazing story

I received this book as an ARC for an honest review. This is not a taboo book it is a BDSM type of relationship.

In this book we get the story of Kimberly and Charles. We have seen how this couple has their HEA in the other three books. In this one we find out how it all began. In this book Kimberly is fighting her feelings for Charles she knows that she might have stronger feelings than friendship but doesn't want to act on them because he is still married to Vanessa. Though she feels bad for all the problems that Vanessa gives him she knows unless he leaves her on his own they can't be together. However when something happens so to Charles in Iraq everything changes.

Charles has always been the kind of man to stand by his woman and honor his commitments but he can't be in this marriage any more. No matter how much he gives she is doing nothing but verbally abusing him and he won't have his son growing up watching this happen to his own father. So to pay off their debt and help him to afford a divorce he closes down his construction company and goes to work in Iraq for a 2 year commitment. Shortly after arriving though he ends up with a cut and an infection that threatens to take his life. During this time he is e-mailing back and forth with Kimberly and they are developing a bond that he has never felt in his marriage.

The question remains what will happen when he comes home from Iraq? What will he loose from this infection? This is an amazing story about finding love when it is the worst possible timing and fighting for it with your last breath. This is an amazing story and after reading the first three books in this series and seeing how Kimberly helps all of her friends it is amazing to see how she and Charles got to where they are. I would highly recommend this book to anyone and everyone this is an amazing story

Lovely Story!!!

I adore Normandie’s Daddy series!!! This story was a rare treat. It included characters from her other books. The cool thing about this story is that it can be read as a stand-alone, as it is a prequel to the others. I recommend you read this and the other books in this series to enjoy the full effect…each story is something special!!! I really enjoyed the development of the two characters…Charles and Kimberly. They seems to complement one another and the love story was so sweet. I hate hate hate Vanessa…she is a very cruel, spiteful and verbally abusive woman. Of course Charles sees a better life with Kimberly and the two of them fall in love….their relationship gets steamier and steamier. It was so cool how their love grew, and they both discovered they liked the "daddy - little girl" relationship. I hope there is a sequel to this since I want to see a nice resolution. Bravo Miss Normandie…awesome job once again!!!

Emotional, Sexy Love Story

This story has everything a reader could want – a hero who makes you swoon, a heroine you can root for, and a wicked witch you want to throttle! This book tells how the Daddy’s Girl Club began, and we meet many of the characters we’ve grown to love in books 1-3. It was fun to see how they meet each other, and now I understand why Sloane has never been a fan of Charmaine.

But there’s more to this romance than just insanely sexy encounters. This book is an emotionally charged read about a man deployed to a war zone and what it’s like for the woman he loves. Charles is an incredible hero, a bad-ass Ranger with a sensitive side. (I died when he said he was working on his pain tolerance!) The tenderness and vulnerability he shows in his letters to Kimberly is heart-wrenching. Not only a much-anticipated installment of Alleman’s hot Daddy Dom series, but also a great military romance.

A combination of techniques used in quilting and origami, quiltagami involves folding and stitching fabric into animal, flower, and leaf shapes that delicately pop out from quilted blocks that can be displayed on their own or integrated into a more elaborate project. Hiney uses clear color photos (unfortunately, not always carefully keyed to the text) and step-by-step drawings to illustrate the folding and stitching process, stressing throughout that practice makes perfect. An attractive array of these blocks, in prechosen color schemes, follows, each one introduced with a list of fabric and notion requirements and a photo of a finished product. Pattern diagrams ready for enlargement are pictured and clearly labeled. The designs are quite nice, ranging from sweet, folded-fabric ducks traveling a quilted sea and a three-dimensional pinecone ornament to an intricate rose that bursts from a background of sage-green leaves. Great Idea...Poor Implementation

This book looks wonderful and the quilts the author has made are beautiful, however the directions for the "origami" are nearly incomprehensible. I have become completely frustrated by the written instructions and the drawings only make sense on the first few steps of each project. An origami duck, which should take 15 minutes to produce, had four adults completely stumped for an hour. I only recommend this book if the author comes with it to explain how the pieces are made. Perhaps a video would be a good solution.

Challenging

I was very pleased with the book, however, as a beginner quilter, I like to wait a bit more, before attacking " Origami with Fabric", it looks a bit complicated to me.
