About the Author
Timothy G. Stout lived in Japan for over 20 years and has taught Japanese language in public and private schools, and at the university level. While teaching at the American School in Japan he conducted research on the use of keyword mnemonics in the instruction of Japanese. Stout has a Doctorate in Education (EdD) from Utah State University, an M.A. in Japanese Pedagogy from Columbia University and a B.A. in Japanese Teaching from Brigham Young. He currently teaches Japanese at Utah Valley University, and resides in Lehi, Utah with his wife and five children. Stout is the author of Japanese Hiragana and Katakana for Beginners and Let's Learn Japanese, both available from Tuttle.

From the 37-day life of the pre-McNugget chicken to the appallingly inhumane conditions of slaughterhouses and meatpacking plants, the author lays out the gruesome details behind the tasty burgers and sandwiches. Equally disturbing is his revelation of the way that the fast-food giants have studied childhood behavior and geared their commercials and free toy inclusions to hook the youngest consumers. The text is written in a lively, lay-out-the-facts manner. Occasional photographs add bits of visual interest, but the emphasis here is on the truth about soda pop and obesity, fries and lies. Schlosser is a crusader writing with an obviously strong purpose. While at times veering toward the inflammatory edge, he backs up and documents all of his points, ensuring that his insights will incite. A lot to chew on :-()

I really like this book. I bought it (even though it's geared more to kids) because I am a fan of Fast Food Nation (can't wait till the movie comes out) and wanted to hear what he had to say this time around.
He's targeted 9-15 year olds mainly because American kids are so unhealthy and out of shape - he wanted to not tell them what not to eat, but in fact enlighten them about what they are actually eating. Because the stats are so high for being obese at age 35 if you were obese at 13, he wants to try to stop kids getting obese by age 13 in the first place.
He takes shots at the soda industry as well as fast food restaurants. There is a chapter dedicated to the sodas making kids fat/unhealthy.
1 out of 3 toys in America come from fast food restaurants he states, showing the 'marketing skills' of these chains to lure kids to want to eat there.
Chew On This is really designed to make people (especially the kids) aware of what they are buying and eating and awareness is key to the choices you make.
I loved this book. It's eye opening and interesting and does in fact make you chew on his thoughts. I think he's done a great job here. I hope this message sinks in to kids heads and make them reconsider what they would rather eat.

Ira Berry received his M.A. in Biology from Hofstra University, Hempstead, New York, USA and his M.B.A. in Management from Adelphi University, Garden City, New York, USA. He provides instructions and conducts plant audits for CGMP compliance, quality systems evaluation, SOPs, preparing and filing Drug Master Files and dosage form product registrations and personnel training. His professional affiliations include his membership in the Generic Pharmaceutical Association and International Generic Pharmaceutical Association. Berry has worked extensively with Development and Task Force committees with the FDA and is a recognized health care manufacturing industry expert. ROBERT P. MARTIN is a consultant at RPMartin Consulting, Lebanon, Pennsylvania, USA. Dr. Martin received both his M.S. and Ph.D degrees from the University of California, Riverside, California, USA. Throughout his career, he has held positions at many pharmaceutical companies, including Forest Laboratories (as Associate Director of Quality Assurance), Duramed Pharmaceuticals (as Director of Quality Services), Merck & Co. I hope people are ready

As described by the author, he wrote this at the urging of others. Sometimes I'm not sure he explains what he means as fully as needed (like the references to being our brother's keeper), but the book makes it's point. Robots and AI will change work in ways we have never seen. Maybe at every revolution in work (the steam engine, large scale manufacturing machines, etc) jobs have been lost and new jobs created. But this long march of efficiency will soon take a turn where there really are no jobs. Not jobs to China or Mexico, just no need for any humans to do them at all. It may be against human nature to prepare for changes before they bocome a crisis, but I would like to think we can start to adjust away from defining our worth and our lives by the job we do.

Good but missing a definition of "un-work" and data on motivation

This is a good but unfinished book. Or maybe it just needs a fast sequel. The author makes an erudite case that both the Left and Right believe in full-time employment for all; that this is an unreachable goal and is unnecessary with the addition of minor tweaks in tax rates. Everybody can have, should have, a basic income without having to work. So here's the rub for me: What does Livingston mean by "work?" Is it anything I get paid for (everything else is un-work)? I'm working on this review. Working! Does that count? I'm assuming not, but Livingston never spells out what this state of doing things for which people aren't paid is-- and crucially, whether is it s good idea in fact (look, I like the idea but want more data about it). As I moved through the book, I was looking for empirical data about motivation and happiness: With millions of people not working for money, would they need training for un-work? Or just figure it out for themselves? For what drives motivation, check out Daniel Pink's DriveDrive: The Surprising Truth About What Motivates Us. Or Flow: The Psychology of Optimal Experience Flow: The Psychology of Optimal Experience (Harper Perennial Modern Classics). Gallup polls show year after year that few people in corporations experience either motivation or flow. Can we do a far better job with people out in the wild? Or would they figure it out on their own?

About the Author
MIKE COLLINS is best known as the penciller on the Panini Doctor Who Magazine. He is the storyboard artist for Doctor Who, has illustrated two Doctor Who graphic novels, and has drawn for the US IDW Doctor Who series. Mike has been creating comics for over 25 years and has worked for Marvel, DC, 2000AD and a whole host of other publishers. He currently draws a series of noir crime fiction graphic novels -- Varg Veum -- in Norse and provides storyboards for TV and films, including Doctor Who, Warhammer 40K, Igam Ogam, Claude, Hana's Helpline and Horrid Henry. He lives in Cardiff, Wales and his studio is a short walk away from The Rift. He has a wife, three daughters, a neurotic cat and is an enthusiastic yet staggeringly inept dancer.

Fantastic Designs but printed double-sided and across two pages makes it less than friendly for the colorist

Rather than discuss how this is like or different from the TV series, I will discuss only how I feel about it as an adult coloring book.

While the book has great designs, it also has a number of issues that make it difficult to work with. I dithered between a three star and four star rating but went with four because the designs are really extraordinarily good.

The designs are fantastic for coloring. They are well drawn with a nice level of detail where I want it and a lack of detail where I would prefer to add my own shading, etc. It feels a little weird to be coloring the faces of actual individuals (and those who have spent many an hour in my house albeit on my television screen.) Using the coloring tools that will work best with this book, I will have fun with it. Maybe do a little Andy Warhol riff with unusual colors on some of the characters.

Physically, the book is well made. The front and back covers flip out with a scene of London that can be colored. The designs are printed on both sides of the page. The pages are a good heavyweight and white; however, they are not perforated. The sewn rather than glued, so removing the pages from the book involves snipping several strings in a couple of places. Most of the designs span across two pages and merge into the binding. Though I will remove the pages from the book, it may be difficult to line up pages and that makes coloring in this book less fun. As there are so many of these designs that will be effected, I have detracted a star from an otherwise good book.

My particular book had two issues which may not be in others. On a number of pages, my double sided images did not line up. That happens sometimes. The other problem with my book was that there were four rippled pages. Amazon is replacing my book as it was obviously damaged in printing. I am not taking away points for this as mistakes can happen and it is being fixed for me.

All of my markers, both water and alcohol-based, leaked through the page. None of my gel pens bled through to the back of the page. My colored pencils all worked well on the surface of the paper. Given this, I would not recommend using markers in this book if you want to color each page as you will definitely ruin the design on the back of the page otherwise.

In summary, a coloring book filled with great designs but which has a number of physical issues. The book could have been improved in a number of ways, such as printing on one side only and if not, using a better grade of paper which allows markers to be used without seeping through to the backside. Perforated pages would have been nice. But the real improvement would have been to have less designs that span two pages. If you must do this, 1) make sure the images line up properly and 2) give us some room at the bound edge to be able to get our pencils and pens in to draw.

Like the drawings, just not the format

The drawings are nice, but I don't like the format. Some of the drawings take up two pages, but it seems like the focus of some of the pictures is cut in half by the center of the book. I'm not sure how I'm going to color some of these. I was hoping I'd be able to cut the pages out, and either color them flat, or scan then and print off copies onto printer paper so I could color some of the pictures more than once. (I was kind of wanting to put some of the colored pages in frames for my wall when I was finished)

The pictures are printed on both sides of the page, which also will probably keep me from using any markers on them for fear of the ink bleeding through and ruining the pictures on the next page. (the paper seems fairly thick, but some of my markers have gone thru thick paper)

I would have liked this better if the pictures were printed on only one side of the page, and that they hadn't put some of the drawings on two pages. It ruins the look of the artwork.

EDITED TO ADD PICTURES

If you look at Amazon's pictures of the artwork, one of them shows the scene of Sherlock and Mycroft playing Operation. Their example shows what looks like an entire page, and probably would have been fun to color if that's what it looked like in real life. I included a picture of what it actually looks like in the book, along with another picture of an example of Sherlock on the roof of St Bart's.

They put the center of the pictures into the middle of the pages. It totally ruins any enthusiasm that I would have had to color the pictures.

At least the pages with the Wall That Had It Coming wallpaper seem to be coloring friendly to me, because that's one of the things I really wanted to color.

Returning do to very poor layout! What were they thinking?

Pre-ordered this (before there were any reviews or screenshots) and am returning it immediately. Designs are printed right to the edges of the page, disappearing into the center binding which means you cannot complete any page. And since most scenes span dual pages, the best you can do with these is color most of the left side, leave an uncolor-able center stripe, and then do most of the right half of the scene. Binding is such that book will neither lay flat or can it be disassembled into 'full' pages without cutting away a section of printed illustration. Basically, therefore, unusable. Seems like a rookie layout mistake; why didn't the illustrator or publisher notice?

Life Changing!

This book is truly life changing! I began doing treatments before reading the book and I can only say that it is a total mystery how most of this stuff works. We've got the basics down, yes, but how your body is able to just bounce back after years of being so ill all over an allergy? Crazy! It is simply wonderful that it exists and the practice itself should be more widely known. Thank you, Devi, for sharing your findings!

I really like this book and we've had great success with a certified NAET Practitioner. In fact, it is the 2nd book I've bought and am giving this one to someone interested in the process). I'd give 2 stars for the condition of the "new" book. We received it with torn binder and bent cover (which also had some wavy bend to some of the pages). I don't think it was the packaging, because it came in tact. For the condition of a new book, I was disappointed. But the content is great, therefore, I give the book 5 stars.

Gave me my life back!!

NAET WORKS!!! This amazing treatment is working so well, it's allowing me to eat foods that I haven't eaten in years! My asthma is greatly reduced and my chronic hives have disappeared completely! The book is not necessary to read in order to receive treatments, but reading it will give you a better understanding of what you're doing (avoidance rules, re-treatments, etc...). Really give NAET a try, it could change your life! I haven't been this healthy in years, I went from being an itchy mess to a healthy happy individual in only a few short months. Thank you Dr. Nambudripad for developing this amazing treatment!!
